Box Office | "Civil War" Sets A24 Record With $25 Million Debut

Industry

Director Alex Garland's compelling dystopian thriller "Civil War" dazzled at the box office, pulling in $25.7 million on its opening weekend. It's the first film from A24 to top the charts in North America, establishing a new record for the studio's debut weekend. Additionally, it achieved the largest R-rated opening of the year.

As the weekend approached, "Civil War" was anticipated to launch with earnings between $15 million and $20 million. These projections were enough to potentially surpass the opening of "Hereditary," which in 2018 started with $13.6 million, making it the biggest debut for A24 until now. The film features Kirsten Dunst as a journalist navigating a violently split United States, drawing audiences intrigued by how the narrative of a blue-state/red-state divide unfolds and whether it resonates too deeply in an election year. Enhanced viewing options such as Imax and Dolby Cinemas helped boost ticket sales, with notable performances in cities like Los Angeles and El Paso, Texas—interestingly, these locations are pivotal in the movie's fictional "Western Forces."

Despite receiving a "B-" CinemaScore, which typically isn't a good sign for word-of-mouth promotion, A24's reputation for crafting films that are simultaneously disturbing, captivating, and divisive keeps drawing audiences. "Civil War" is the studio's most expensive production to date, costing $50 million. The rights to foreign markets have been sold, assisting A24 in recouping its investment even before the North American release.

At this stage, the overall box office is about 16% behind where it was at the same point in 2023 and 31% below the pre-pandemic levels. "Civil War" was the only new film this weekend, which meant that several other movies continued to perform well. Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” fell to second place after leading for two weekends, earning an additional $15.4 million in its third weekend for a domestic total of $157.9 million.

Sony's "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" maintained its third-place position, earning $5.3 million across 3,350 theaters. In four weeks, this sci-fi comedy sequel has garnered $96 million domestically and $160 million worldwide, which is a modest return for a film that cost $100 million.

"Kung Fu Panda 4" from Universal and DreamWorks Animation climbed to fourth place, bringing in $5.2 million in its sixth weekend. This animated family film has now earned $173 million in North America and over $452 million worldwide. With a production budget of $85 million, "Kung Fu Panda 4" has performed well during its theatrical run.

"Dune: Part Two" completed the top five, adding $74.3 million in its seventh weekend. The sci-fi epic has now accumulated $272 million domestically and $683 million globally, making it the highest-grossing film of the year.
