Flávia_FerreiraJune 18, 2026A film about what it feels like to truly live!
Train Dreams feels as if you're looking through a collection of photographs while listening to the memories of the protagonist, Grainier, being narrated.
It's one of those films that are more about what you feel while watching it than about explaining its story. It's beautiful, poetic, and deeply reflective!!!
The film shows how small gestures, environments, and the people we meet gradually shape our lives. It is a story built from memories, the memories of a man who spends much of his life working in remote places, expecting nothing new from existence. But everything changes when he meets Gladys. For the first time, he experiences something different, something profound. At times, he can hardly believe such happiness is real because it feels so peaceful and loving.
Grainier is gentle and reserved. Joel Edgerton portrays him brilliantly, making you reflect on and feel everything his character experiences. His expressions say more than words. You can feel both the pain and the quiet happiness he carries within him.
Gladys, interpreted by Felicity Jones, is like a ray of sunshine whenever she appears on screen. She becomes the character's refuge, but you can also sense that she represents the lightness and beauty of life itself. She and their daughter bring warmth, meaning, and a new perspective to a man who once believed life was nothing more than the passing of days.
The story takes place in the 20s, during the rapid expansion of railroad lines across the United States. Much of the film unfolds within vast forests; as trees are being cut down to make way for transportation routes. The film also touches on the consequences of this relentless deforestation and how it affects the small communities surrounding these areas.
Train Dreams never rushes its events. It follows the natural rhythm of life, allowing everything to happen in its own time. The film speaks about grief, about losing our sense of direction, and about finding our way again while trying to navigate the chaos left behind by the absence of those we love.
The cinematography by Brazilian cinematographer Adolpho Veloso is a lyrical work of art ,breathtaking, moving, and unforgettable. In my opinion , nature and the cinematography are among the film's true protagonists. Every frame feels alive. The use of natural light creates a sense of contemplation, inviting us to admire both the beauty of nature and the lives of these characters. I am an unapologetic admirer of this and many of Adolpho Veloso's other works.
And speaking of nature, it plays a significant role in Grainier's memories; alongside the people he encounters throughout the journey we call life.
Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar wrote a special movie. The whole work is absolutely beautiful.
Train Dreams was one of the most wonderful surprises I watched in 2025, and it will stay with me forever.
And just like the character, I found myself thinking:
"Suddenly, life made sense."

FlemishCatFebruary 28, 2026I’m not a big fan of films mostly told through narrators. This is a sad, contained story. Not bad, but not very exciting either. A kind anti-hero.

YaggertDecember 1, 2025
YaggertDecember 1, 2025There is nothing more poetic than an ordinary life, which, with all the events of everyday life, becomes anything but that. Joy, pain, sadness, grief, peace. All emotions that we all feel at one time or another, from which you cannot escape.
With his melancholic and wonderfully expressive eyes, Joel Edgerton takes us through a whole lifetime and invites us to experience everything Rainer went through. The moment he falls in love, has a daughter, the years he worked himself to exhaustion, the people he met along the way (for a day or several years) and could never forget, those who left him, and the regrets that never did.
The vignettes presented by Clint Bentley feel exactly like the memories anyone would have of their life, and the final sequence moved me to tears with how it reminds us that no matter how much pain and suffering we encounter on our respective journeys, there is always the possibility of being amazed again. To see the world with new eyes. To find beauty among the ashes of a fire that brought death and rebirth.

StevenCsMoviesOctober 12, 2025The award-nominated writers of SING SING, Greg Kwedar and Clint Bentley, have now upped their game even more with TRAIN DREAMS, this time with Bentley directing. It has a similar theme of the beauty and unpredictability of humanity and the world itself. Based on a novella by Denis Johnson, this is a character study of Robert Grainier (Joel Edgerton), a logger working on a railroad in 1917. He’s stoic, a hard-working man with a wife (Felicity Jones) and daughter to take care of. He’s a man of few words, but he’s thoughtful, looking for purpose in life. Usually, having a narrator could be seen as a crutch, but it’s done so well here, voiced by a smooth but powerful Will Patton. He gives us more insight into Robert and the world around him. The movie touches on discrimination during the “Great War”, but its main focus is Robert and how the world changes around him. The process of building a railroad represents both destruction and progress. Chopping down trees, then making the world smaller by building railroads. It also focuses on Robert’s workmates, one played by William H. Macy. His role is very small, but this might be the best he’s ever been. Speaking of “best he’s ever been”, freakin Joel Edgerton. This man does so much, with little dialogue. It’s an award-worthy performance on top of an already awesome career. Humanity’s complicated relationship with nature is another theme here. Overall, this is a poetic meditation of America, about the ups and downs of one life among many. I had the privilege of seeing TRAIN DREAMS in a sold-out theatre, and I can’t wait for you to see it when it comes to Netflix on November 21. I know this review is early, I just had to put something out there about it. Put it on a list, make a reminder, don’t pass this one by when it finally releases!

Esteban EordoghJanuary 23, 2026
