Train Dreams is One Of The Best Films Of The Year

General Reviews

I recently watched Train Dreams on Netflix and I‘m crying.

The movie tells the story of Robert Greiner, a man who was an orphan from a young age and we follow his life across 80 years. From his childhood, to lonely moments in his adult life, and this movie captures how you have a whole life ahead of you.

The film is slow, but it hits you hard in the feels. At several moments, I was sobbing over how beautiful the script was. This is based on a novel, but I didn‘t have the time to read it, but I get the idea that it will be as depressing as the film.

Why is one of the Best Films of The Year?

Train Dreams has a short runtime, but the majority of the film you are following Robert through his life and feels like forever, but you don‘t want to end. You feel everything from him. Joel Edgerton gives an astonishing performance as Robert, he really brings all his talent to the table, there‘s a scene where Robert is crying with his native american friend, and you can feel his sadness coming through his eyes and mouth. It‘s sad, but beautifully portrayed.

The cinematography is stunning, every frame feels like a painting. Every landmark, scene in the snow, or even a walk into the forest feels like a dream. Director Clint Bentley gives in every frame a sense of joy and understanding about life. Also, the film contains a narrator, it can become annoying for some people, but it becomes a neccesary part of the story. It becomes a character and a partner into Robert‘s journey.

This is a story about living through tragedy, moving on and not looking back to the past and finding your happiness. Building a home, creating friendships, appreciating the small moments in life that become meaningful.

It also explores the invisible pain that people carry sometimes, not just grief that someone is gone, is about broken dreams, family struggles and things that never came to be. It‘s a profound film, a quiet journey into a man‘s struggles in life and definitely you will need to watch at least once.

It‘s on Netflix.
