Live review - Mission Impossible 2: Nu-Metal the Movie

I will be watching and providing my thoughts on Mission Impossible 2. Easily most people's least favourite film in the series, although I personally think 3 is the worst. However I'm interested to give this a spin for all the Limp Bizkit, Oakley sunglasses, John Wu hot off the serious critical and commercial success of FaceOff (something I've never understood) comedically self serious Cruise and full tilt year 2000 energy. My mission, should I choose to make it all the way to the end of the movie is to stay engaged for the film's dead zones of quality. This discussion will self destruct after my 3rd vodka soda.

There's literally no point trying to describe the last 23 ish minutes of this movie. It's the reason to watch it, and I find it fascinating. For all the other amazing faults and failures of the story, the last extended action sequence is one of the best to be put to film, and I would compare it to the work of George Miller on Fury Road. Which is why I'm gonna write something about it soon.</br></br>But the actual ending of MI2 sucks ass. Yikes bad.

The matrix eques long jacket on cruise not to mention the shades? Is just awesome. High contrast imagery with serious gunfights and then some Ducattis? Fuck yea.

The Ethan they captured is of course someone in a mask, at this point in the movie you don't doubt it, but it's more about the bad guy realizing than anything.

Lmao, all this for 30 million. </br></br>"Dr. Evil in 1997, 1 million dollars is not a lot of money"

Recently I thought it was the McQuarrie influence on these movies that brought the Metal Gear vibe, but I'm wondering it wasn't Cruise all along. This end action gauntlet is so removed from anything modern and features sensibilities that are so attuned to not just Wu but Kojima as well. It would make more sense that Wu would be acquainted with Kojima, but Cruise has to know who he is by now.

At this leg of the movie I'm feeling a lot of the pulsing vibes and droning ambient energy that would find it's way into the Batman Begins score.

Although Ethan uses guns and totally kills people in other movies, this is def the most gun heavy movie. Fuck them Doves again!

The CIA kills people for less than 30 Million. I could see a missile strike on this compound being more effective.

The last part of this movie makes no goddamn sense except that there are motorcycles, it's beautiful Australia, there is somehow a full chopper shot of a bad guy compound and Ethan rock climbs his way in.

The second half of this action encounter is muddled in Ethan realizing he can't pull this mission off as he planned it. Then she tries to get him to kill her, but then...the Ethan we know can't do it. Haunted by his team's death in movie one he blows a hole in the wall and dives out "Stay Alive, I'm not going to lose you", while sparks and gunshots fire and he dives out into space. </br></br>My 14 year old self is like, hell yeah
