Live review - Mission Impossible 2: Nu-Metal the Movie

I will be watching and providing my thoughts on Mission Impossible 2. Easily most people's least favourite film in the series, although I personally think 3 is the worst. However I'm interested to give this a spin for all the Limp Bizkit, Oakley sunglasses, John Wu hot off the serious critical and commercial success of FaceOff (something I've never understood) comedically self serious Cruise and full tilt year 2000 energy. My mission, should I choose to make it all the way to the end of the movie is to stay engaged for the film's dead zones of quality. This discussion will self destruct after my 3rd vodka soda.

To Catch a Thief / 90's Soderbergh style lounge music for the extent of this scene. It's very silly in a way that Cruise would never touch now.

The secret safe in the bathtub scene is pure soap silly. But it's also really fun.

It's cool that this Ethan is still in his "earlier" days and seems a lot more unsure, although it's still pure cockiness or capability, but there are more moments of "I don't know what's going on" than we'd see after MI3

Aside from the millennial digital blur and Wu's insistence on period slow motion, its very beautifully shot in this sexy party sequence. Thandie Newton is gorgeous and her and Cruise are grinding off each other without ever touching.

Although I didn't get it before - oh shit Robert Towne Screenplay - I think now that the theme "Take a Look Around" by Limp Bizkit kicks ass.

The Oakley's and Anthony Hopkins as his boss? Sick.

This really establishes Ethan as a thrill SEEKER in a way that the first movie doesn't.

The climbing sequence, Cruise's first big stunt. Apparently he and John Wu clashed about him doing these stunts. Iko Iko is an inspired song for this. Honestly, it's an iconic action sequence. His silly ass hanging off this rock, doing the reverse hang.

Good Goons. William Mapother is one of them. The score is already filled with some serious millennium style riffs.

It's the bad guy in Hunt disguise, but I like the idea that Ethan has had informants and confidants this far back. Like Bogdan in Ghost Protocol.

Nothing like a good virus injecting gun.

Might be wrong about that. This filmed in Sydney AFTER the Matrix and this movie was most certainly influenced by that.

DVD Menu looks great. Classic 2000, although this originally only released on VHS.
