The dynamic shift from adversaries to unlikely allies has proven to be the perfect recipe for the Easter weekend box office success.

Warner Bros. and Legendary's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" erupted onto the scene with an impressive $80 million at the domestic box office, far surpassing the anticipated $45 million to $55 million. This remarkable debut marks it as the second-highest opener in the MonsterVerse series, an impressive achievement for the fifth installment in the series. It also secured a spot as the fifth-largest Easter weekend debut in history, based on Sunday's estimates.

On a global scale, the film made a colossal impact with a $194 million launch, buoyed by $114 million from international markets across 64 territories. This included a notable $44 million in China, where Legendary East is overseeing the distribution. This is particularly noteworthy as many major Hollywood releases struggle to achieve such success in China. With Monday's figures, it's set to eclipse the $46.5 million garnered by "Dune: Part II," becoming the highest-grossing Hollywood film in 2024 in China. In Mexico, "Godzilla x Kong" debuted with $12.8 million, setting a new franchise record, and achieved the studio's largest-ever opening in India with $5.5 million. The film is still expected to launch in several key markets.

Despite mixed reviews from critics, the audience reception has been overwhelmingly positive, earning an A- CinemaScore and 4.5 stars on PostTrack. The film has attracted a diverse audience across all the major age demographics, with males accounting for over 67% of the ticket sales, and 62% of viewers being 35 or younger.

Adam Wingard returned as director for this blockbuster, featuring stars like Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Dan Stevens. In this installment, the iconic monsters Godzilla and Kong decide to set aside their rivalry to tackle a new, enigmatic threat that endangers their world.

The success of "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" isn't the only cause for celebration for WB and Legendary. Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part Two" has surpassed the $600 million milestone globally as of Friday, a significant jump from the $406 million worldwide total of its predecessor.

"Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" faced little competition, as Sony's latest Ghostbusters installment, which premiered the previous weekend, saw a 65% drop.

"Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" secured the second spot, bringing in $15.7 million domestically for a total of $73.5 million and a global tally of $108.5 million, which was somewhat underwhelming.

"Dune II" maintained its third-place position in its fifth week, even after losing many Imax and premium screens to "Godzilla x Kong," which accounted for 48% of its opening weekend's revenue; motion 4D screens were especially popular.

In the US, "Dune II" earned $11.1 million, reaching a domestic total of $252.4 million, while its international earnings added another $18.4 million from 73 markets, bringing its overseas total to $373.7 million and a global sum of $626.1 million.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation's "Kung Fu Panda 4" continued to perform well, ranking fourth in its fourth week with $10.2 million for a domestic total of $151.7 million and $347.3 million worldwide.

Universal's acclaimed "Oppenheimer," which delves into the story behind the atomic bomb dropped on Japan to end World War II, made its debut in Japan. It brought in $2.6 million, marking the largest opening among Hollywood films in Japan for the year, and surpassing many of Christopher Nolan's previous films.
