American Horror Story (2011)★ 8.0/10

The theme of the twelfth season isn't particularly fresh within the American Horror Story universe. Though similar to the first season and the plot of Season 1, Episode 5, it lacks the climactic intensity of the former and the succinctness of the latter. It's a struggle to get through the first 5 episodes; the plot drags, there's too much filler, and the use of the "protagonist can see/hear things that others can't" trope, while understandable, is excessively employed in every single episode to extend the runtime. The first 5 episodes could have been easily condensed into 3. I'm reluctantly giving it six stars after so many years of watching AHS, but it probably only deserves two stars.

The story, the characters and the atmosphere were all perfect in the first few seasons of American Horror Story. Soon after that, it feels like they have completely given up on coming up with good scripts. At least the characters are still quite charming in their acting. The latest season has really nothing to write home about besides the beautiful aesthetics. Now they can’t just let Emma Roberts carry this entire season, can they?

The first episode is pretty mediocre and it strays away from the usual narrative style of the series. With the foreshadowing from various signs and the different tones of mood, the overall design of the story is already out of the dark. As a dark themed show, it is neither dark nor scary. I have a feeling that it will become another story of cheating and conspiracy theories. I gotta mention that the husband character is intriguing. Hopefully the characters that are going to be introduced later on in the show will bring the show back to life. (btw I kinda want to see Emma give birth to a spider baby).

The first episode is too bland. The story does indeed remind viewers of Rosemary's Baby and some other conspiracy theories. Many familiar actors have left the show, and I'm still gonna watch it even if it goes downhill, because I'm a fan of this IP. I hope that even if they can't nail the plot, they could at least make the show scarier (which is probably unlikely, too). The two latest episodes are becoming such drags... I'm literally tired of these unnecessary mysteries and the slow pacing.

I have no idea why this is still on. No show should last longer than 5 seasons, after that they just start repeating plots and it’s so annoying.

What I like the most about this show is that, due to its anthology structure, they can create characters and plots using all kinds of American mythology. My favorite season is the second one, the setting is an asylum, a place famous in the US for being haunted.
