She began acting in 1982 alongside her father, Jon Voight, but her first major role was in Hackers (1995). Jolie is known for her roles in films such as Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), Maleficent (2014), and Girl, Interrupted (1999), for which she won an Oscar Award for Best Supporting Actress. In addition to her successful film career, she is also well known for her humanitarian work. Her fame continued with action films such as Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2005), notable for being the starting point of her romantic relationship and marriage to actor Brad Pitt.
