StevenCsMoviesSeptember 24, 2026Director Zach Cregger now has 3 hits in a row. He started with the unpredictable BARBARIAN, then the wild WEAPONS. He now has RESIDENT EVIL, based on the giant video game franchise. To be clearer, this has an original story within the world of RESIDENT EVIL. I should probably start by saying that I have never played a Resident Evil game. I know some of the basics of the franchise, but I went into this movie with no attachment to the games, their characters, or their lore. I can only judge it as a horror movie, and as a horror movie, I had an absolute blast. Cregger wastes very little time getting things moving. Bryan (Austin Abrams) is a courier of important organs between hospitals. His night starts going horribly wrong. This movie is fast, tense, violent, disgusting, funny, and occasionally completely ridiculous in the best possible way. The story has a mission-based structure, just like a video game. The camera follows behind Bryan, turning when he turns, like the video game. Abrams is a huge part of why it works. He doesn't feel like the typical unstoppable action-horror hero. He's overwhelmed, terrified, and often seems like he's barely keeping himself alive. That made him incredibly easy to root for, especially as the situation around him gets increasingly insane. The horror-comedy balance also really worked for me. The movie can be genuinely creepy and gruesome, but it knows when to let the tension break with something funny. I really loved the unique creature designs. Cregger clearly knows how to build a horror sequence, and there are some fantastic setups and payoffs throughout the movie, including quite a few well-done jump scares. I'm sure there were references and Easter eggs that went completely over my head, but I didn't need to recognize them. The movie gave me enough information to understand the story, characters, and stakes without making me feel like I needed to do homework beforehand. Maybe longtime Resident Evil fans will have a completely different perspective on it. Overall, RESIDENT EVIL is one of the best video game movies out there, and it did what it set out to do. You’ll have fun with your friends seeing this one.
