It’s definitely a good idea to check out the basic plot of the novel Queer before diving in, or you’ll end up just as confused as I was in the second half...

This film totally has that classic Luca Guadagnino vibe. It’s divided into four chapters, and honestly, while the first two are stunning, the last two take a wild turn into absurdity. After watching it, I finally understood what the Venice Film Festival's "star is born" comment was all about. Drew Starkey looks absolutely gorgeous on screen. It’s been ages since I’ve seen a character who makes my heart race the moment they pop up.

Divided into four parts, the film’s quality steadily declines the longer you watch it. The first act captures a compelling dynamic between the leads, but subsequent sections grow increasingly surreal and incoherent. By the final act, the story spirals into a solo performance that leaves the audience baffled.

The film weaves a simple love story through unconventional cinematography, fragmented editing, and a moody, retro aesthetic. While it offers a sensory experience, it ultimately lacks narrative substance and emotional resonance.

It's about the transience, fluidity, and unknowability of queerness: in contrast to the first chapter's rapid (and unequal and asynchronous) fascination and fetish in a miniature model of a small Mexican town, the last three chapters' journey through mysticism and hallucinogenic substances becomes a journey of self-anatomy and asceticism.
