No Hard Feelings (2023)★ 6.5/10

Not bad, but also way too safe. The ending could have been a little crazier. Instead, it was just like really safe. But it has some good humour throughout and some good heart.

Jennifer Lawrence delivers a stellar performance, especially in the beach scene where she fully immerses in her role. During the date, her character is refined and poised. The ending aligns well with modern values of achieving personal growth and self-awareness, rather than following the clichéd trope of lovers ending up together.

The film transitions from comedy to romance and ultimately to a coming-of-age friendship story. Though summers end, the young man heading to Princeton will never forget the mature woman who helped him grow. Likewise, she won't stay for him but will always cherish the genuine love they shared, with California's warm sunshine healing her emotional scars.

It's a pretty clichéd, summertime popcorn comedy. The plot is quite predictable, and all the funny parts are already in the trailer. Thankfully, the strong chemistry between Jennifer Lawrence and Andrew Garfield keeps the story from feeling too dry.

The real focus of this film is Jennifer Lawrence herself, with everything about the male lead being secondary. If you really think about it, you’ll find that the movie presents and responds to many "famous events" or the ups and downs of Lawrence's career, all of which occurred during her "post-Oscar-winning era." The genuine and candid storytelling in this film makes it one of the most significant Hollywood works of 2023. It aims to offer care and healing in the midst of the feminist movement with a unique and lively voice, while also instilling hope, confidence, and courage for a fresh start.

Jennifer Lawrence is so funny! She could not been more charming. Perfect.

Jennifer Lawrence gives an Oscar-worthy performance in this R-rated comedy, portraying her role finely, well-balanced, and convincingly. The characters are introduced in an intriguing way, with their unspoken trauma hidden in the quietness of life’s trivialities soothing many souls of the extroverted loners. After humor, it becomes heartwarming again, but it avoids the stereotypical traps of other romance films and instead focuses on personal growth and self-awakening. This is certainly a surprising turn!
