Like Soul, this film is incredibly empathetic. Setting aside its fantastical premise, we see characters grappling with real emotions, real teenage troubles, and happy tears. The mother-daughter relationship in the movie resembles Bao, but it feels less stereotypical. I believe such parent-child relationships would be relatable even to a Western audience. The poignant reconciliation at the end, like Encanto, is particularly moving and makes it an excellent movie choice for watching with parents.

There are two primary conflicts this film brings to the table. Firstly, the protagonist's adolescent rebellion takes center stage while clashing with the perfectionist ideals instilled in her since childhood. Each clash seems to tear her identity apart and take her further and further from what she wants, but she cannot fully abandon either side. Secondly, the collision between Eastern and Western cultures and values is another running theme. The intergenerational conflict between mothers and daughters reflects the inevitable conflict when different values and ideologies confront each other. Ultimately, it's a happy ending when the film successfully reconciles these conflicts by having the protagonist choose to be "the obedient daughter" while occasionally indulging herself.

Super fun and full of heart, I loved the humor and the characters. Strong female empowerment message for those who need one!

When people discuss whether the "red" in "turning red" is a metaphor of menophania or something else, they are really neglecting the techincal charm of this film that maximizes the use of the medium. It's been a long time since there is an animated movie that "should be shown in 3D" and has the "unique advantages of animation”. The way several cut scenes are handled makes me smile, and the inclusion of various appropriate "anime" elements doesn't feel out of place at all. Perhaps because of the difference in age and life experience, I felt that the entertainment in the first part surpassed the emotional delivery itself; but seeing the climax where she’s going into the bamboo forest and holding her mother’s hand - that kind of "having witnessed karma, we need to break the cycle of suffering” is REALLY touching! It’s truly a perfect piece of work.

The movie clearly shows two main contradictions. One is the heroine's teenage rebellion and the pursuit of perfectionism that has been instilled in her, and each transformation is like a betrayal to her own heart which can not be completely abandoned. The other is the collision of "risk-aversion" in the Eastern culture and the "risk-taking” in the Western culture; from the mother turning her back on the grandmother for the sake of her own love, to the lies that the daughter tells her mother for the sake of her dream of chasing her idol... The conflicts passed down from generation to generation are actually the inevitable result of different ideas coming into conflict. In the end, the movie succeeds in solving the heroine's conflict - she chooses to be the good girl recognized by her family, but also allows herself to be crazy once in a while, which is now understood by everyone. But what is hard to see is that this seemingly simple choice is a balance that all women, like mothers, go through countless struggles to achieve. A round of applause to the women who have worked so hard to achieve this balance!
