This is about as close to a perfect women’s film as it gets. It isn’t about the conflict between women and men—it’s about the journey of an independent, self-sufficient woman finding peace with reality after facing her struggles.

The heartbreaking part of this story is how a woman has to go through struggles brought on by men just to truly dive into the art she’s passionate about.

The central theme is supposed to be the protagonist’s defiance of being a man’s possession and her fight for independence, but the ending contradicts this message. She abandons her piano and falls in love with the man who used the piano as a bargaining chip to hurt her. The reason for her muteness also feels forced and overly contrived.

It’s hard to believe this film shared the Palme d'Or with “Farewell My Concubine”. The film lacks logic, the pacing is poor, and the editing is disjointed, with numerous continuity errors that are simply intolerable. The last half-hour is especially nonsensical.
