Del Toro's radical adaptation of the original fairy tale retains his signature dark style and yet remains heartwarming. Set in Nazi Italy, the film portrays the brutality of war. The moral of the story's no longer about speaking the truth, the theme is now about humanity and family.

Based on the fairy tale, del Toro's personal touch breathes new life into this old story. The three-act structure gradually fleshes out Pinocchio's character. The boy's growth, his increasingly complex psychology, and his companionship with each departing character are deeply moving.

I absolutely love it, and I'd say it's one of the best animated films I've seen in the past few years. The adaptation of the story is simply fantastic, and Guillermo del Toro's personal touch gives the original tale a whole new level of charm. As the story progresses through three stages, Pinocchio's character evolves and develops compellingly, seamlessly connecting with the overarching narrative and leaving a deep emotional impact.

Guillermo del Toro puts his signature dark style into play while still delivering a heartwarming tale, taking a rebellious approach to adapting the original fairytale. Set against the backdrop of war-torn Italy, the film vividly portrays the brutal realities of war. With the "not telling lies" theme fading into the background, the movie shifts its focus to the intricate aspects of human nature and the strength of family connections, resulting in an ending that might make you realize the ebb and flow of time.

Though the art style isn't exactly my thing, Guillermo del Toro brings a fresh twist to this timeless story, approaching it from a new angle and making it distinct from the original. He delves into the mysteries of death, love, self-discovery, and eternal life, giving this version a more human touch. Stop-motion animation breathes new life into Pinocchio, perfectly blending with the modern era as it infuses inanimate objects with spirit and soul.

Trust in Guillermo del Toro to deliver a masterpiece devoid of mediocrity. A simple fairy tale brimming with depth, and is sometimes reminiscent of The Little Prince in its simplicity and profundity. Pinocchio explores themes of paternal bonds, growth, anti-war sentiments, and fascism, ultimately questioning the essence of human existence.

A Pan's Labyrinth with puppets, del Toro's version opts for realism over animation and successfully carves a unique niche far surpassing Disney's adaptations. The film delves deep into themes of manipulation by fame, national identity, and parental expectations, with del Toro's flair for the grotesque and eerie style ever present and working well with the theme.

One of the Best Animation in 2022

The puppet version of Pan's Labyrinth is more realistic than animation version, Guillermo del Toro found a good entry point for his work, which is much better than Disney's remake. Besides, the theme is richer too. Toro photographed the puppet in a very authentic way. Children are controlled by fame and wealth, national consciousness, and parents' expectations, somehow, they become puppets. Rules, life and death, etc. The grotesque image design and weird style creation that Toro is good at are still good.
