The makeup and effects are a major step up, with the riverside zombie sequence surpassing even “The Walking Dead” in terror and realism. The found-footage style still makes the camera work dizzying, yet it draws you in completely, delivering genuine scares.

The sequel clearly learns from the first film’s mistakes, trimming the runtime to 96 minutes and cutting the number of short films from six to four. The image quality is vastly improved, moving away from the grainy VHS look, while the shaky camerawork is greatly reduced—though with it, some of the original’s VHS charm is lost.

The short films included in this movie vary in sub-genre and narrative techniques, resulting in a varied collection of stories perfect to spend a terrifying Halloween.
