How We Watch Movies Has to Change...

And it begins…

I was recently online watching a movie on Canada's own CBC Gem - ‘Shiva Baby’ - and despite the commercials interrupting at particular intervals, it was one of the more interesting films I have seen recently (Rachel Sennott is definitely a future threat).

Now, I am not someone who likes to condemn new technology (you may as well push back a tide with your bare hands), but I had to wonder about the format that I watched this and other movies on recently.

I do not have Netflix (the story behind that is worth its own article), nor do I really bother with Mubi, Hulu, or any other streaming services besides the one I mentioned earlier and YouTube (and does the latter count?). I feel as if the experience of film is not the same anymore, and that the cineplexes and the few remaining repertory theatres are not as enticing as they used to be.

Now, believe me when I say that this is not something I would ever dare to suggest, but the way we watch movies has to change dramatically if we want to keep people heading to the latest feature. The numbers are in and people are not spending their time or money on this entertainment the way they used to…and this matters. Yes, I volunteer at a film festival and I can see that there is a big audience for genre films, but the world of cinematic entertainment should be a much bigger tent.

Just my two cents…
