Star Wars: Echoes of Veridian
Fan Fiction
A long time ago, the Clone Wars ended not with peace, but with the Jedi Order's decimation and the Galactic Empire's brutal ascent. For years now, maybe fifteen years after Palpatine declared himself Emperor, the galaxy has lived under the shadow of the Dark Side, policed by legions of stormtroopers and hunted by the spectral Inquisitors – fallen Jedi twisted into instruments of Vader's will. We've all heard the legendary stories of Luke Skywalker and how he sparked the Rebellion. But what about the dark times and struggles faced by the enforcers of the Empire?
Fast forward to around 4 BBY, and the Empire's relentless expansion uncovers something unexpected. It’s not just another rebellious faction or a hideout for smugglers; Veridian Prime is a forgotten world in the Outer Rim, brimming with mysterious Force energy and dotted with ancient ruins that date back to the days of the Old Republic. What’s the next step for the Emperor when such a place is found? Obviously, securing it before any Jedi remnants can. An Inquisitor is dispatched. Not one of the Grand Inquisitor’s inner circle, but the Thirteenth Brother – less famous, perhaps more expendable, but ruthlessly efficient.
I imagine the Thirteenth Brother arriving on Veridian Prime, his TIE Advanced cutting through the planet’s thick, emerald atmosphere. He’s a gaunt figure, clad in black, the tell-tale hum of his double-bladed spinning lightsaber a constant presence. His mission: locate the source of the Force disturbance, eliminate any Jedi connection, and claim the planet’s secrets for the Empire. He follows the echoes in the Force, faint whispers leading him toward colossal, vine-choked temples.
Little by little, the signs become clearer. Not just ambient Force energy, but the distinct signature of a trained Force-user. A survivor. The Thirteenth Brother quickens his pace, anticipating the hunt. Inside the largest ruin, amidst crumbling statues depicting unknown Force wielders, he finds his quarry. Not a frightened Padawan, but a Jedi Master – aged, serene, meditating. Master Lyra Dann, thought lost during the Purge.
The confrontation erupts. The Thirteenth Brother ignites his crimson blades, the spinning discs a blur of deadly energy. Master Dann rises, activating a simple, single-bladed saber emitting a calm, azure light. I picture the clash echoing through the ancient halls – the Brother’s aggressive, relentless assault against Dann’s patient, defensive Form III, Soresu. He presses her, taunting her about the fallen Order, the futility of her resistance. "Your time is over, old woman! The Force serves the strong now!"
But then, something shifts. Master Dann doesn't just defend; she speaks, her words cutting through his rage, probing the cracks in his Dark Side conditioning. She speaks of his past, a past he tries to bury – the fear he felt as a Padawan when Order 66 came down, the choice he made out of desperation. A flicker of conflict crosses the Thirteenth Brother's face. Is this loyalty? Or enslavement? In that moment of hesitation, Dann uses the Force not to attack, but to push his own memories, his own doubts, to the surface.
The Thirteenth Brother stumbles back, his spinning saber faltering. He sees Dann lower her weapon slightly. An offer hangs in the air, unspoken. A chance. Betray the Master, fulfill his mission? Or betray the Empire, the Dark Lord, and everything he has become? The camera would focus on his helmeted face, hiding his expression, but the Force currents would swirl with uncertainty.
The story obviously doesn't end there. I imagine Imperial probe droids, launched earlier, are relaying the confrontation. Vader, sensing the wavering loyalty, is likely already dispatching forces, maybe even en route himself. The next installment would have to deal with the Brother's choice and the immediate, brutal consequences, potentially turning Veridian Prime into a battleground between a lone Master, a conflicted Inquisitor, and the might of the Empire. Finishing with a post-credits scene showing Palpatine observing through the Force, a cruel smile playing on his lips as he whispers, "Interesting..."
