The Lost Boys (1987) A Stylish and Bloody 80s Vampire Classic
General ReviewsThe Lost Boys is a really fun 1987 vampire movie that perfectly captures the atmosphere of the 1980s. It mixes horror, comedy, teenage drama and a great soundtrack into something that feels very much like its own thing. One of the biggest strengths is the cast, especially Kiefer Sutherland as David. Sutherland is absolutely fantastic. He brings so much charisma and menace to the character that David immediately becomes the standout of the movie. He has that effortlessly cool vampire presence while still feeling genuinely threatening. It's easily one of the performances that makes the movie as memorable as it is. The California setting also works really well. The boardwalk, neon lights, motorcycles and nighttime atmosphere give the movie a distinctive look. The soundtrack fits the movie perfectly too, helping create that classic 80s feeling. There are plenty of memorable scenes, and the movie does a good job balancing its horror with comedy. I also enjoyed the practical effects and the overall vampire mythology. Some of the sequences are genuinely creepy, while others are just entertaining in that wonderfully over-the-top 80s way. However, the movie isn't perfect. Some of the effects haven't aged particularly well, and the story can feel uneven in places. There are moments where the movie seems more interested in its style and characters than actually developing the plot. Some of the humor also doesn't work quite as well today. Even with those flaws, The Lost Boys remains a very entertaining vampire movie. It's stylish, memorable, has a great cast and an excellent soundtrack, and Kiefer Sutherland gives a performance that steals the movie.
Rating: 4/5
A fun 80s vampire classic with plenty of personality and Kiefer Sutherland is absolutely fantastic as David.
