Back to the Future Part III: The Perfect Goodbye to a Legendary Trilogy
General ReviewsBack to the Future Part III is a fantastic way to close out one of the most entertaining movie trilogies ever made. After the time-travel insanity of the first two films, taking Marty McFly and Doc Brown to the Wild West of 1885 was a great change of scenery. Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd remain the biggest reason this trilogy works so well. Their friendship is at the heart of the story, and this movie gives their relationship an emotional payoff. Marty once again has to figure out how to get home, while Doc finally gets a chance to find happiness of his own with Clara. The Western setting is also a lot of fun. Seeing the DeLorean in the Old West, dealing with horses, trains and a serious lack of gasoline creates plenty of entertaining situations. The final train sequence is easily one of the best parts of the movie and gives the trilogy a spectacular climax. The movie isn't perfect, though. Some of the Clara storyline slows the movie down, and the Western comedy doesn't always hit as hard as the jokes and situations from the first two movies. It also doesn't have quite the same sense of surprise as the original. Still, Back to the Future Part III succeeds where many trilogy finales fail. It gives Marty and Doc meaningful character arcs, wraps up the major storylines and provides a genuinely satisfying ending. And that final shot with Doc's time-traveling train? Perfect. Back to the Future Part III may not be my favorite movie in the trilogy, but it's a damn good conclusion to an iconic adventure.Great Scott! What a trilogy.
