A Valentine with Henry Roth.
General ReviewsLet's see if he makes me fall in love, over and over again too.
If I had the opportunity to choose a movie character for a blind date on Valentine's Day, I would without hesitation choose Henry Roth, although you may be more familiar with the name... “the character Adam Sandler played in that movie with Drew Barrymore”, or you might also remember him simply as “the leading man from 50 First Dates (2004)”.
I could have opted for a classic movie heartthrob, an action hero, or even a prince charming, the truth is that at this point in my life, after having met so many princes who turn into toads when kissed, I have learned to detach myself from that princely Disney ideal with which we have distorted the male figure since we were little girls, to find the true essence of love built as a couple with my own Shrek. But, there is something in Henry that has always kept resonating, not particularly in my heart, but rather in my mind, and that goes far beyond his sense of humor or his natural charisma. It is that something that I still haven't quite figured out, hidden in his ability to fall in love as if it were the first time day after day, and that I would like him to explain to me, so that I can build, together with my husband, that solid and loving relationship that will lead us to grow old happily together, and what better occasion than a Valentine's Day sharing for such a master class.
It all starts with a free spirit with a genuine heart
Henry lives in Hawaii, works in an aquarium, and spends his free time with marine animals, so to me, as a biologist, he already stands out as an example of the things I've always wanted to share as a couple: a fascination with nature and a love for animals. Without those two aspects so transcendental to me, it is technically impossible that any man could have aroused my curiosity even to turn around and look at him, no matter how big the box of chocolates.

However, while at first glance, Henry may excite me with the idyllic perfect life, he has one small detail that becomes the biggest obstacle for any well-planted woman: his unconscious fear of commitment. His life plan is to avoid serious relationships and enjoy life with no strings attached, or at least that's what he would have instilled in his pattern of those limiting beliefs through which we tend to view the world, more often than might be even emotionally healthy for anyone.

And so it would have been throughout his youthful years of prolonged post-adolescence, as part of that very human instinct of not adapting to change, until the realities of maturity hit us head-on and forced us to confront the childish behaviors that we have not wanted to overcome and that prevent us from continuing to grow, For Henry, that slap in the face would come when he sees himself, guided by his heart, to submit his “freedom” bias when he meets Lucy Whitmore (Drew Barrymore), a charming woman with a memory disorder – of traumatic origin – that makes her forget everything that happened the day before. And here is where Henry proves that, behind his image of a laid-back guy, a man is willing to fight for the love of his life, managing to conquer her, after all, who wouldn't like to be with someone who would choose him not just once, but every day for the rest of his life?

Why is Henry the ideal candidate for a date?
As I told you at the beginning, my main reason for inviting Henry, to a Valentine's meeting pursues purely pedagogical purposes, but even so, I can't help feeling tenderly attracted by a whole repertoire of qualities that tempt me to sigh for him, so allow me to present those details, more graphically way, as I believe they are part of the instinctive behaviors that have allowed us to survive and evolve as a species:
💝 1. He is fun and spontaneous: Although he is not the typical perfect man who follows the rules of conventional romance, he is creative, spontaneous, and a little clumsy, which makes every moment with him unpredictable and unique.
💝 2. He doesn't give up easily: Falling in love with Lucy was not easy, as she would forget him with every new dawn, so he had to start from scratch, but instead of getting frustrated, he found a thousand ways to make her fall in love with him every day, exemplifying with absolute clarity that relationships are only sustained by the daily contributions we give to the other, and ourselves.
💝 3. He would do anything to see you smile: From building romantic scenarios to recording videos to remind Lucy of who she is, Henry proves that true love is not about ease, but effort and dedication.
💝4. He's adventurous but knows when to settle down: His confrontation with his own paradigms teaches us that love is not an obstacle to freedom, but rather an adventure towards building true happiness and fulfillment.
💝 5. His love is unconditional: He could have perfectly well gone on with his life, he could have chosen someone “normal”, but he decided to keep trying again and again, day after day, no matter the challenges. Is there anything more romantic than knowing, that the person who accompanies you, will always be willing to not give up?

What would a date with Henry be like?
According to the movie itself, I would be more than sure that his plan would be this:
🐧 A visit to the aquarium where he works, feeding penguins together.
🚤 A boat ride at sunset, with him telling a funny story.
🏝️ A seaside dinner in Hawaii.
🎥 And at the end, a video made especially for you, reminding you how special you are.

However, in addition to this, I would dare to make him a proposal a little more inclusive, in which I would also have space to make myself co-creator of that moment, instead of delegating all the responsibility to him to make me feel good, and thus manage to build a moment of authentic sharing, in which we can both take care of each other, as it should be learned to do in any good relationship. But, to know what he would like to receive on Valentine's Day, I should at least call him on the phone first, so if you have a way to contact him let me know in your comments, to see if I can have a chance with him for next year.
