LLet's Talk About...October 23, 2023
Whether it's the cinematography, music, or performances, it's undoubtedly a top-notch commercial movie. Yifei Liu's interpretation really shows Mulan's growth and potential changes in each stage very well. The micro-expressions on her face, if carefully observed, are very interesting. The movie's fight scenes are generally exciting, but unfortunately it’s kinda short, building up the excitement but ending abruptly, and that is unsatisfying. The music includes traditional Chinese instruments and is grand and atmospheric, not clichéd, and I really like it.

I actually think Yifei Liu is quite suitable for this character. Compared to the witty and lively Mulan in the original animation, Mulan in this movie is a female character who is looks gentle but is actually strong on the inside, and wants to live on her own way in such a repressive and conservative patriarchal society. And the follow-up, in which Mulan breaks free, is in the same vein as the director's Whale Rider, which is about the journey of women's awakening. Mulan is one of the best movies about feminism in any of the Disney-princesses live-action blockbusters, and Mulan is more like a knight than a princess.

Kinda disappointed. I can see that the film crew wanna create a historical epic different from the Disney's previous styles, but is limited by being a fairytale; the war scenes look like child's play (also due to the ability of the director). Also, the characterization of Mulan is not good enough. The character obviously can be molded in many ways, but whether it's Mulan's motivation to face herself, or the process of the army accepting Mulan's female identity, it's all too carelessly managed, greatly weakening the the emotional aspect of the film's climax. Finally, Yifei Liu seems too soft to act like a tough warrior; her acting skills didn't match the character well in the complex emotional scenes, and that’s actually why I couldn't feel the charm of Mulan.

Cannot match the original

Mulán's live action brings some new aspects to the original, especially in relation to the plots and the new characters. However, the end result is contrived and is a far cry from the brilliant execution of the animated classic.

Absolutely not

Visually, it's a work of art and the cast is pretty good too, bonus points for keeping it in the Asian realm production-wise. But the story? I'm not a classic movie purist by any means, but to not have an iconic character like Mushu, and then try to shove this empathic sisterhood with a random witch who (even though she is THE Gong Li) also happens to be "at the underbelly of the system" down our throats just felt like an opportunistic and desperate grab for the modern femminist representation we now see on screen. Is it valid? Definitely. Is it believable? Not so much. Not only that, it's also uncalled for, because the whole point of the original Mulan is that she clawed her own path as a warrior and an honorable daughter despite a system and a culture that were against her. So the focus and the moral of the story are watered down completely.

Visually mesmerizing

This beautiful love story about women vindication finds a new body for one of the most ambitious in visually mesmerizing Disney live-action movies.

Realmente me gustó.
