Wayne_WatersJuly 28, 2025The plot may unfold in a fairly straightforward way, but its wry humor and spot-on jazz soundtrack elevate the experience. Melissa McCarthy is an absolute revelation, shedding her usual comedic persona to bring Lee Israel to life with a rich mix of wit, vulnerability, sensitivity, and tragic charm. Richard E. Grant is equally brilliant, and together they create something quietly unforgettable.

2easesJuly 24, 2025Norah Jones once called New York City a “beautiful disease,” and that melancholy note echoes perfectly through this story. The few shots of the city don’t offer comfort or familiarity, instead, they suggest endless possibilities. Anyone passing by could be a fraud, a genius, or simply someone who loves cats—perhaps all at once.

It turns out that being a female writer and raising a cat makes her old and miserable. I don't do it anymore, okay?

Melissa McCarthy surprises us with an extraordinary role playing the writer Lee Israel and her adventures to survive. She portrays us a lonely and sullen short-haired bio writer in this independent film, far removed from the actress's usual registers. She is perfectly escorted by Richard E. Grant in the role of her friend. The dialogue is fun and fresh, the movie is a great mix of indie drama and comedy, and the plot is highly entertaining.
