Why was I so annoyed by Prince Eric the entire time?

Not a bad film, by any means, but one that does feel as though they’ve stretched 80 minutes worth of source material into a 135-minute film. Overly long and with a narrative far too sparse to earn its lengthy runtime. However, Halle Bailey is great, and the effects are not bad at all. Certainly not the worst Disney live-action remake. So I guess that’s a win?

It’s almost as if adding to the original story to give characters more depth or make relationships more believable could result in a serviceable remake! Shocking! I suppose it helps that Halle Bailey is a superstar in the making, but aside from her obviously brilliant performance, everyone here is surprisingly good. King, McCarthy, Diggs— all stellar. Most of the new songs in these remakes have been horrid. The Little Mermaid continues that trend with a song called “The Scuttlebutt”. My heart goes out to parents who are forced to listen to it in perpetuity because of the stranglehold it will have on kids. We are on this inevitable route where Disney will remake all their classic IP, and I hope they can continue to conjure up even a fraction of the charm of this one.

It's 2023! It's embarrassing as hell to hear from non-humans about their deep fascination with human society, again. When will humans stop being so narcissistic?! The whole movie is about showing how stupid narcissistic and arrogant humans are.

It's bad, not a single scene moved me... There's no clear reason why they quoted Hans Christian Andersen's original text in the opening, and too many topics are being discussed shallowly. The iconic scenes are all exactly copied from the original animation, which is totally unimaginative. Also, the glamour shots that every Disney princess protagonist always has to show off her charms (such as Belle in Beauty and the Beast walking past the flowers with a book in hand) are not present in this movie, which makes me feel that the little mermaid isn't a princess in a fairytale. Is this the most "un-Disney" film color palette? How could you make children dream with such realism?

The highlight of the adaptation is the addition of the spell for Ariel to forget the necessity of kissing to stay human, which turns the relationship into one of real emotional attraction. The well-written male lead makes it clear why they can be each other's soulmates - both tired of the "patriarchal" oppression and longing for freedom, the prince is just a "mermaid" on land and the mermaid is just a "prince" in the sea. They're just embracing another version of themselves.
