Jordan Peele's masterpiece? 'Us' was a film that I had very mixed feelings about after the success of 'Get Out'. I watched it, thought about it, and had to return to the theatre to pick out what worked and what did not really sit right with the narrative. A family goes on vacation, with the wife - Lupita Nyong'o, who gives an Academy-Award worthy performance - agitated by the discovery that this was a spot where she had a very uncomfortable encounter...with herself. Doppelgangers abound in this film, as do underground tunnels, 80s nostalgia (yes, I am old enough to remember Hands Across America), and class and race issues that you would expect from the director and writer of this film.
I give it nine out of ten; I may have to adjust that grade in the future as this film feels ever more timely.
It should be.
It's all about...Us.

The film, while innovative in a genre as saturated with clichés and predictable as horror, was very well directed, acted, and written; 'Us' surpasses all the high expectations created by the new project of an auteur and creative filmmaker.

The atmosphere is meticulously crafted, the setup is inventive, and the visual quality is top-notch. However, the logic behind the underground world's operation doesn’t hold up under scrutiny. As a standalone thriller, it’s highly accomplished. The conclusion and final twist, though somewhat rough and abrupt, still manage to tie up the film’s primary narrative of pursuit and survival. The limited depiction of the underground world weakens the intended metaphorical depth.

"Us" is an exceptional film with a twist on a failed revenge plot involving genetic clones. The director’s artistic flair is evident, hinting at aspirations for both box office success and Oscar recognition. The cast, especially the daughter, delivers remarkable performances, with her portrayal being the most terrifying element of the film.

Jordan Peele steadfastly uses the horror and thriller genres to critique the political landscape. "Us" symbolizes the United States, and the juxtaposition between shadows and real humans depicts the opposition, tension, entanglement, and division between people of different classes. While narratively underdeveloped compared to Get Out, it is just as ideologically critical.

The directing is solid, with excellent buildup, decent pacing and twists. However, the middle section feels convoluted, and the aesthetics and metaphors become overly symbolic. Consequently, there are several instances where the audiences laughed inappropriately. The excessive explanation at the end robs the film of its charm.

Jordan Peele is an artist; there's no denying the exceptional cinematography, music, and performances in this film. However, from a storytelling perspective, it doesn't quite have the surprise factor of his previous work, Get Out. Perhaps now that I'm familiar with his work after Get Out I've high expectations for this film, but ultimately, the story didn't astound me.

There are quite a few similarities between this film and Get Out; it's still a WTF, nerve-wracking movie. It's thrilling while incorporating comedic elements. Plus, it's loaded with a plethora of metaphors for societal issues... If the director continues to make societal themed thrillers like this, he could truly shine. The only disappointment is that his films never seem to be quite captivating enough.

The holding-hands-around-the-world protest has such a dark, depressing, ON POINT humor that literally made me jump of the chair.
