Heroin(e) (2017)★ 6.9/10

It’s a solid short documentary that manages to touch on diverse issues—from women in the workforce to addiction, drug abuse, healthcare, and community dynamics—in just thirty-nine minutes. The main drawback is that none of these topics are explored in depth. A feature-length version could yield far more insight.

The short running time keeps the film from digging into the root causes of the opioid crisis. Still, the three women at its center are extraordinary, saving their communities through a shared sense of responsibility, refusing to abandon addicts and sex workers.
