It is incredible! I feel like I haven't seen such an energetic film in theaters in years. Of course, the original stage play was great, but this adaptation is exceptional. The characters are well-developed, most of them are mean but still somehow endearing. The emotional arcs of the two heroines are clear and build up nicely. And at just the right moments, a simple action brings out a deep sense of love and humanity that instantly brought tears to my eyes. Despite being 160 minutes long, it never feels too long because every shot is meaningful. In a time when faith seems to be fading, it's refreshing to see a work filled with such vitality and sincere emotions. It’s a film that can really restore your faith.

Surprisingly, the film surpasses the original stage musical in several ways. The director takes bold risks by expanding transitional scenes without cutting out any songs, creating a cohesive and rich narrative. While the long runtime only covers the first act, the intricate choreography, elaborate set pieces, and thoughtful camerawork make for a thoroughly engaging experience.

At 2 hours and 40 minutes, the film overstays its welcome with the first two monotonous hours that are almost sleep-inducing. The characters lack complexity, and the musical numbers feel unnecessary, detracting from rather than enhancing the story. The most baffling thing is the abrupt transition between Elphaba and Glinda from adversaries to soulmates, which feels both rushed and unearned.

The cast delivers stellar performances, both in acting and singing, while the costumes and sets are undeniably lavish. However, the plot moves at a snail’s pace, taking nearly three hours to cover only half the story, making it feel more drawn-out than the original stage musical. Glinda’s disproportionately long screen time further tips the balance. Still, the prom scene tugs at the heartstrings and earns the film an extra point for effort.

Watching a group of thirty-somethings play out a "Mean Girls"-style high school drama is a stretch, but paired with the director’s characteristically dull staging, the film becomes an exercise in endurance. Somehow, this half-baked story drags on for an absurd 2 hours and 40 minutes, highlighting its sluggish pacing.

The world of Oz has been portrayed countless times, in books, TV shows, a highly successful Broadway show, and movies. Now, the highly anticipated film adaptation of the WICKED musical has finally released, and I’m so happy to talk about it with you fantabulous folks today. To be clear, I went into this without having seen said musical. WICKED tells the origin story of The Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba for short (Cynthia Erivo). It focuses on her relationship with The Good Witch of the North, Galinda for short (Ariana Grande). They attended school together. Elphaba has struggled her whole life just because she was born with green skin. Galinda starts off as a popular but spoilt “mean girl”, but we eventually see a deeper side to her. Most recently, director Jon M. Chu has made CRAZY RICH ASIANS and IN THE HEIGHTS, both of which I enjoyed. WICKED takes the cake. It’s a cinematic masterpiece. The practical production design. The epic songs. The relevant themes. Cynthia’s ability to show the audience what she feels through her eyes. Ariana’s perfect comedic timing. The fact that most of the singing is actually live and not pre-recorded. I’m not a huge fan of movie musicals, but with this many wickedly talented people involved, I was all in for the ride. Keep in mind, this movie is only the first half of the whole story, giving the filmmakers more room to delve into these rich characters. Part two is coming out next November, and I’m counting down the days until I can finally see the end of the story. Don’t worry, the ending is still very satisfying. I went into WICKED thinking it would be good, I left WICKED thinking it could actually be a contender for Academy Awards. Fans of the Broadway show are rejoicing, and so am I. For the love of Oz, see this on the big screen!
