See La La Land to start the year with depression
AAugusta_StantonJuly 21, 2024
This is an excellent film. Its theme reminds us that everyone is on their own path. The people we meet and the paths we walk together, be it friendship, love, or family, come with both gains and losses, sweetness and regret. Ultimately, we are left with ourselves, our expectations, and who we aspire to be.

The casting of the leads is perfect. Emma Stone’s acting, combined with her imperfect beauty, fits her role as a struggling actress. Ryan Gosling’s performance is flawless. Although the middle part drags a bit, the details are well-designed, like the protagonist remembering her time living near a library and searching every library in Los Angeles. The two lovers not ending up together, compromising due to reality, is the best ending.

The more society is engulfed in turmoil, the more musicals flourish in films, providing solace for people. That's why the golden age of Hollywood musicals was in the 1930s to 1950s. "La La Land" caters to modern nostalgia while oozing retro style. However, its dance moves are stiff, its songs are grating, its plot is clichéd, and the performances are painfully awkward. It's essentially a poorly made musical under the guise of famous names. It's perhaps one of the worst musicals ever made.

Both heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time, this film waxes lyrical about how art influences lives. The final scene uses a dream and a film to assuage the regrets of love, and I find it particularly moving. The two characters meet and understand each other through their love for art. They influence and encourage each other to go for their dreams. While their romance doesn't bear fruit, it leaves an indelible mark on their lives. I left the theater in tears.

The trailer was right; no one is making movies like this anymore. Even though it's not a period piece, its techniques and use of color exude a strong sense of nostalgia. For non-locals, this movie fulfills all fantasies about this city while managing to depict the harsh reality of Los Angeles for those who live there. It's clear that the director truly loves Los Angeles. Watching "La La Land" in Los Angeles was a truly magical experience, and it was very special to me.

The most romantic and visually stunning love story of the year, with many moments that remind me of "Singin' in the Rain". It's the city of music and the city of stars—the place where dreams and reality collide. It's a testament to how crucial a good ending can be, elevating an otherwise mundane narrative to new heights! I'm giving an extra star to Stone; she will definitely clinch the Best Actress award at next year's Academy Awards.

this single-handedly reinvented musicals, singing, dancing, cinematography, comedy, seasons of the year, the piano, every color on the entire color spectrum, romance, jazz, and pure joy, this cured my depression and brought it back full force in the span of 2 hours. However, the ending made me cry for the next 5 hours.

Real life being sung on the screen

Contains spoilers
As a fan of musicals, I was very excited to watch this movie, mainly after all the great reviews it received. I was waiting for some tears in the middle, but not at all at the end! Mia and Sebastian were the perfect couple, and not seeing them ending up together was devastating. But do not mistake that for my opinion about the movie, it is still great because it makes sense. They do not break up out of nowhere, everything is built and developed to be like that. It’s a depiction of real life, painful but surmountable. I wish we could sing to make those moments easier.
