VIFF Weekend Recap

It's been busy! I met a lot of really cool people, and saw some great films and not so great films. Shoutout to Gerald for giving me the insider scoop on professional ping pong in the '70s. Hopefully I get to see your review of Marty Supreme later this year.

But back to VIFF

Sentimental Value

Really enjoyed this, except I had to crane my neck to read the subtitles over the head of a very tall person in front of me. Not much to say, other than this is a solid family drama with some knockout performances, I'm sure we will be seeing more of this come awards season.

Pillion

Love. It's equal parts tender and intense, hyper-specific and also incredibly universal. We aren't all a leather-clad bikers willing slave, but I bet we all have had the experience of growing into (and out of) romantic relationships.

Blue Heron

I won't say much here, but there will be a full article coming very soon. I didn't know coming into this that it was shot in Nanaimo—my hometown—and Vancouver. It's meant to be nostalgic and heartbreaking, but it felt doubly so for me, seeing the place I grew up on film for the first time.

Akashi

Getting to see the love in the room for this home-grown world premiere was very moving, as was the film itself. Highly recommend giving this a watch, it will be playing again on Thursday at the Granville Island Stage. There was laughter, there were tears, there was whimsy, and the black and white cinematography was gorgeous.

After the Hunt

Not for me. Absolutely not. This was my most anticipated of the fest, and my least favourite so far. Again, I'll keep this for the in-depth article, but…. this got on my nerves in all the wrong ways

That's a lot of movies for one weekend. Sounds like Pillion was your fav so far?
