Marsha doesn't like the dark. When the sun goes down, she makes sure to turn every light on, including the porch lights, to ward off any lingering spirit. However, on her fortieth birthday, something horrible began to occur. It started like a stain, in the center of her vision, and then began to grow.

By noon, Marsha couldn't see a thing. Her heart thrummed in her chest, making it difficult to hear. She shoved her hands forward until her fingers found a wall. Okay, that's the edge of the doorway, she thinks when her fingers slide over the smooth bumps of the doorframe. She passes through the threshold and walks out into the hallway. Her socked feet slip, so she removes them. The hardwood is cold and rough.
