Practical effects or CGI, real locations, fabricated sets, or green screen.

Lately, there has been a trend and a boom in the use of practical effects, reviving some of the old techniques used in special effects.

 

In my opinion, practical effects often give scenes more authenticity and weight. But in some specific cases, I prefer CGI. For example, in the last two episodes of Alien Earth (episodes 5 and 6), the xenomorph looks much better with CGI than the actor in a sexy costume dressed as a dominatrix.

i'd always vote for real locations. ik there's always budget and time issues, but seeing actors pretending to swim with their hair being 'windswept' instead of actually floating in water (esp in period cdramas) really takes away from the show and just makes it funny instead...
