Danny and the Danger Zone
Short StoryDanny and the Danger Zone
It was supposed to be an ordinary afternoon on Old MacDonald's Farm.
That was the first sign something was wrong.
The cow was quietly chewing grass when a shadow passed overhead.
Flap. Flap. Flap.
A bat dropped out of the sky and landed squarely on her back.
The cow screamed.
"HELLO, VAMPIRE BAT!"
The bat adjusted himself and sighed.
"Vampire? No. It's my lunch break."
His name was Vin, and he had the confidence of someone who had absolutely no reason to be confident.
The cow blinked.
"Moo?"
Before Vin could answer, a cloud of dust exploded across the field.
THUP THUP THUP THUP.
A jackrabbit came skidding around the corner.
Danny.
Danny the Darting Jackrabbit.
The fastest rabbit on the farm.
The loudest rabbit on the farm.
Possibly the most dramatic rabbit in recorded history.
"VIN!"
"Hey, Danny!"
"Lunch break?"
"You know it."
Danny grinned.
"Fried frog legs."
Everything stopped.
The wind stopped.
The birds stopped.
Even Vin froze.
From somewhere inside a bush came a horrified whisper.
"Oh no..."
A frog slowly pushed aside a leaf.
"Seriously?"
Danny shrugged.
"What? You expected me to say carrots?"
The frog looked personally attacked.
Danny reached behind him.
ZZZZZIP!
Vin looked confused.
"Danny."
ZZZZZIP!
"Danny."
ZZZZZZZZIP!
"DANNY."
Danny pointed proudly at the motorcycle sitting beside him.
"Listen to that engine."
Vin stared.
"Dude."
"What?"
"That's your jacket zipper."
Danny ignored him.
The motorcycle somehow revved anyway.
ZIP! ZIP! ZURRRP! ZIP!
Danny threw on a leather jacket with giant lettering across the back.
DANNY: INTO THE DANGER ZONE
Vin tried to climb onto the motorcycle.
Danny swatted him away.
"Boundaries."
Vin twirled his brand-new handlebar mustache.
The cow stared.
"Moo?"
Nobody knew why the bat had a mustache.
Not even Vin.
But it looked incredible.
The zipper engine roared.
ZIP ZIP ZIP ZIP!
And they blasted toward the horizon.
The cow sighed with relief.
Finally.
Normality.
Then she felt a stare.
A cold stare.
The kind of stare that says somebody has been left out of an adventure.
Standing near the fence was Spot.
A one-eyed toad.
He wore the expression of a sheriff moments before delivering justice.
"They left..."
Spot's eye twitched.
"...without me."
The cow took a cautious step backward.
"Moo?"
Spot reached into a tiny satchel.
The cow expected a weapon.
Instead he pulled out a kite.
A breeze caught it.
Spot bounced once.
Twice.
Then launched into the air.
BOING.
BOING.
WHOOSH.
He sailed into the sky like an angry amphibian missile.
"TELL DANNY I'M COMING!"
The cow watched him disappear into the clouds.
Then she looked down.
She was wearing rollerblades.
The cow blinked.
"Moo?"
No explanation arrived.
Only destiny.
The rollerblades activated.
The cow exploded across the field.
WHOOSH.
CLACK CLACK.
WHOOSH.
She slammed through the barn doors, skidded sideways, and crashed directly into a barrel of carrots.
CRUNCH.
CRUNCH.
CRUNCH.
The world went silent.
The cow slowly lifted her head.
A carrot hung from her mouth.
She smiled.
Life was good.
Then a penguin walked into the barn.
A penguin.
On a farm.
Nobody questioned it.
He adjusted his bow tie.
Cleared his throat.
"And THAT, children, is how Old MacDonald's Farm was supposed to be sung about."
The cow stared.
The penguin nodded wisely.
Then he pulled an enormous blue-purple kite from behind his back.
Because apparently everyone owned kites.
The kite caught the wind.
FWOOOOSH.
Up he went.
Soaring gracefully across the sky.
"E-I-E-I-FLY!"
Far above the farm, Danny's zipper-powered motorcycle raced across the clouds.
Vin held onto his mustache.
Spot pursued them on his sheriff kite.
The penguin glided majestically through the sunset.
The cow rocketed across the countryside on rollerblades she never asked for.
And somewhere in the bushes, the frog watched it all unfold.
He pulled a lucky rabbit's foot from his pocket.
Looked directly at the audience.
And winked.
Because around here, chaos wasn't an accident.
It was the whole show.

DANNY MAN: RIDE THE GLITCH
The next part of Danny and the Danger Zone
It was supposed to be an ordinary afternoon on Old MacDonald's Farm.
That was the first sign something was wrong.
“Hello, Vampire Bat.”
“Vampire? No. It's my lunch break.”
“Moo?”
Vin the bat stretched out on the cow's back like he owned the place. Which, in his mind, he did.
Below them, Danny the Darting Jackrabbit revved his zipper-powered motorcycle.
ZIP! ZIP! ZURRRP! ZIP!
High above, circling on his sheriff kite, Spot the one-eyed toad shouted down through cupped hands:
“THIS TIME, DANNY! THIS TIME I'LL BE THE ONE IN THE SKY!”
Danny grinned up at him. “I'd like to see you try!”
"Not right now, Danny," Vin said quietly. He was staring at the horizon. “We've got company.”
A dust cloud was rising in the distance.
Not a fun dust cloud.
An angry dust cloud.
"How did these get here?" Danny whispered. “HOW did these get here?”
Vin's mustache twitched. “This just went from a joyride to a hunt.”
"Nothing outruns the zipper," Danny said. “Nothing.”
A voice crackled across the field, cold and amplified:
“GOT YOU IN MY SIGHTS, HAREBRAIN.”
Danny froze. “Did that cloud just talk?”
“GOTCHA NOW, YOU LONG-EARED MENACE.”
"Okay," Danny said, swinging onto his motorcycle. “So the cloud talks. Not right now, cloud!”
"The need for speed," Vin said, hopping on behind him, “is non-negotiable.”
"HELP!" shouted a voice from inside the dust.
"NO," said the dust.
They struck.
Vin was right. It was a hunt now. The dust cloud split open and poured itself across the pasture like a living thing, and inside it were shapes. Dozens of them. Maybe hundreds.
"Vin," Danny said, twisting the throttle, “we've acquired a fan club.”
"A chaotic and surprisingly mobile one, sir," Vin agreed.
"Come on!" Danny shouted. “We can't lose them now!”
They tore across the field with the cloud at their heels. Above them, Spot dove and banked on his kite, shouting directions nobody could hear.
"Look at our sky parade, Vin!" Danny laughed. “They've never seen showmanship like this!”
"That's not a parade, Danny." Vin clutched his mustache. “That's a POSSE.”
Aerial pursuit. Vehicular evasion. The motorcycle's zipper engine screamed.
Somewhere, impossibly, a calm voice announced:
“Audience engagement is peaking. Audience approval is at seventy-eight percent.”
Danny blinked. “Did you hear that?”
"Hear what?" Vin said.
"We need more zip!" Danny yelled, and yanked the zipper harder.
ZZZZZZZZIP!
Ahead of them, the pasture rippled. The ground folded itself upward into ramps and loops and spinning blades, assembling mid-air like a trap being built in real time.
"Behold," said the calm voice, “the ultimate obstacle course.”
"Danny," Vin said slowly, “what have you done this time?”
"Wait," Danny said, squinting at the course. “Is that meat?”
"Oh, my stars and gravy," Vin whispered. “What IS that?”
“PREPARE FOR IMPACT!”
“HANG ON, PEARL!”
The cow, who had been peacefully chewing a carrot this entire time, looked up.
“Moo?”
"YOU!" Danny shouted as they shot past her. “MOO! YOU ALMOST KILLED ME!”
The cow watched them go. A carrot hung from her mouth.
Teal light flickered at the edge of the field.
"Yeah," said the calm voice. “The spectacle evolves.”
New shapes rose out of the dust behind them.
“New players enter the arena!”
"Those aren't players," Vin said, looking back. “That's an angry MOB.”
"See?" Danny said, swerving around a spinning blade. “Boring. I'm off script.”
The pasture pixelated violently.
For one frame, the grass was squares. Then the squares were static. Then the static was grass again, but wrong. Too bright. Too sharp.
Laser sights swept across the field, locking onto the sheep. The sheep, to their credit, pretended this was normal.
"Danny!" Vin shouted. “Stick to the beats! The frog has the ratings!”
"I won't let you stop me!" Danny yelled back, though nobody had tried to stop him.
A burning motorcycle sidecar dropped out of the sky and attached itself to Danny's bike with a CLANG.
"A gift from the chaos itself!" Danny cheered.
"Since when does the script have afterburners?" Vin screamed.
A paper square fluttered down and slapped against Danny's forehead.
He peeled it off and read it.
"Daniel J. Rabbit," he read aloud. “You are served.”
"What is this?" Vin asked. “A parking ticket?”
"Failure to comply," Danny read. “Avoids all warranties. Citation for narrative deviation four. Power source suspension imminent.”
The zipper engine sputtered.
"No! No, no, no." Danny yanked the zipper. “It's just stuck. It's JUST stuck.”
"I've got you," Vin said, grabbing the handlebars.
Danny's helmet flew off. He caught it, held it up, and asked the sky:
“Did it at least look cool?”
The sky did not answer.
Because the sky was gone.
"Where is the sky?" Vin whispered. “What am I looking at? Oh my god.”
Gray static was eating the horizon. It moved like a tide, and where it passed, the color drained out of the world. The red barn went gray. The green grass went gray. The blue-purple kite of the penguin, gliding far above, flickered and went gray.
"I have to initiate a full system reboot," said the calm voice, “before the audience notices the—”
“Narrative compliance enforced.”
“The desynchronization has begun.”
“It's eating the color.”
Danny stared at the approaching static. Then he smiled the smile that had started a hundred bad ideas.
“This is the ultimate stunt.”
"Danny, no!" Vin grabbed his arm. “Stop it, or you'll erase everything!”
“I'm gonna ride the glitch.”
“DANNY, NO! It's rewriting everything!”
"It's too late!" Danny twisted the throttle toward the static. “Get us out of here!”
“STOP THE BIKE! STOP THE BIKE! STOP THE BIKE! STOP THE BIKE!”
"The static!" someone shouted. “Shemekka, it's not deleting us — it's BUILDING something new!”
"That's the real prize," Danny whispered. “The final stunt.”
"Almost!" Vin screamed. “Danny, no! It's a TRAP!”
“That's mine! Hey!”
The ground rippled under the wheels. The motorcycle lurched.
“It's pulling the ground out! We're falling for real!”
“Can you stop the floor from eating us?”
A new voice cut through the static. Deeper. Hungrier.
“The system demands a sacrifice.”
Danny looked down at his leather jacket. The giant lettering across the back:
DANNY: INTO THE DANGER ZONE
"My jacket?" he said quietly. “The danger zone one?”
"Danny, no!" Vin shouted. “That's your whole THING!”
Danny was already unzipping it.
"A thing is a thing," he said. “Falling is forever. Take it.”
He threw the jacket into the static.
“Just stop the void!”
“Watch out! The static is erasing everything!”
“No! The jacket! It... it...”
The static swallowed the leather whole. For a moment, the giant lettering hung in the gray, glowing faintly.
Then it was gone.
"The system is hungry," said the deep voice. “It needed a symbol.”
The falling slowed. The static paused, as if chewing.
Danny, jacketless, clung to the handlebars in the gray half-world between the farm and whatever came next.
Vin looked at him. “What's it gonna take to stop the fall?”
Danny looked down into the static.
“Everything else.”
To be continued…
