Chapter 1:

The Oakhaven Fog

Portland is a truly interesting and captivating place. After Salem and New Orleans, one could say that mysterious things originate there.
The road is deserted and cold. A group of intrepid young people are on the road, the reason for their trip. Rumors and secrets of a hidden town, far from the mountains, from which many disappearances of young people have been reported from the 1990s to the present day.

The C.A.S. (Curse and Spells) group has acquired a new unsolved case: the Oakhaven Mystery. The group of graduates from the prestigious J.A.P. (Justice and Panormal) university, located outside Boston and Harvard, is made up of George Steel, Rachel Giannetti, Cyndy Stacy, Jake White, David Trouble, and Sophie Truman, the best students of said academy. They have been working for more than five years on this venture created and founded by Rachel and David. They're usually the "Nosy Guys" because they've solved many cold cases and exposed the existence of certain paranormal phenomena that had never been discovered.

The road continues its course, but at a specific moment, there's a shift in the air and a powerful energy. This causes Rachel to feel a slight headache, but she pretends it's nothing so as not to worry the others. However, George, who has known her for five years and they've been dating since they started university, knows her very well and knows she won't admit it, but he himself feels a kind of cold current running through his entire body; however, he just assumes it's a change in temperature due to the distance traveled.

The weathered wooden sign by the side of the road was barely legible through the thick grayish mist: Welcome to Oakhaven. Where time stands still.

Stop here, George- Rachel requested, leaning towards the van's windshield- His eyes shone with a mixture of fascination and caution, though a new throb shot through his head, but he feigned pain again. The air changes density precisely at this point. The records indicated that the telluric energy here is anomalous.

George let out a soft sigh as he tightened his grip on the steering wheel, his gaze fixed on the wet asphalt. After all, his analytical and entirely pragmatic mind didn't allow him to dwell on irrational or supernatural things. He had had to learn, thanks to his girlfriend, to decipher certain things that lacked a logical explanation, and this had caused some friction between them. Although he was part of the paranormal research group led by Rachel—his girlfriend of the last five years—he was always searching for a rational explanation for every whisper or shadow.

“Rachel, the only anomalous thing here is the humidity that's going to rust the engine,” George replied with a condescending smile, though the tenderness in his voice betrayed how much he loved her. We came because of the rumors about the disappearances in the nineties and because you wanted to review the archives of the old town library. Not because you think the trees are watching us.

Let's not start again, George. Not everything in this life has a logical explanation. Many times, things are happening right under your nose. Just because we can't see certain things doesn't mean they don't exist. Some of them have been hidden in this world for 3,000 years.

Rachel, unlike her boyfriend, has experienced numerous paranormal events since she was very young, events that have profoundly marked her life. This has made her mind more open and better able to understand the signs that aren't necessarily explicit in the sky.

In the middle of the van, the atmosphere was completely different. Cindy, with her round glasses perched on the bridge of her nose and a tablet in hand, was typing away at lightning speed.

George’s right, Rachel -Cyndy said- According to the satellite data from my new location app, the magnetic field has dropped by three hertz in the last half hour. She murmured, pushing her glasses up with the tip of her index finger, sharp and meticulous like a true mastermind. “There’s something strange about the underground infrastructure in this valley.

Beside her, Jake yawned as he clumsily tried to open a package of cookies. He always needed something to stave off his practically insatiable appetite during every paranormal investigation.

Unlike Cyndy, he usually had a somewhat absent-minded and carefree air about him, although his reflexes always surprised everyone when the team got into trouble.

At the back of the van, sitting very close together, were David and Sophie, the last members of this rather “unusual” group. At first glance, they seemed like your typical schoolyard cliché couple: she, a champion athlete with a perfect ponytail and a light laugh that hid a sharp, cultured mind she was terrified to reveal for fear of fitting in; he, a laid-back, popular guy who hide

He possessed a deep passion for history and philosophy behind a carefree facade.

At that moment, their hands brushed shyly on the seat, sharing a silent complicity that contrasted sharply with the tensions that Rachel and the others carried.

Look over there- Sophie pointed with her chin, feigning a nonchalant voice while her eyes gleamed with intelligence- The locals are giving us a warm welcome—or a cattle inspection.

At the entrance to the town, lined up in front of the gray wooden facades of the houses, several Oakhaven residents watched them. They didn't move. Their faces were expressionless, and their fixed gazes seemed to pierce the metal of the van.

When George parked in front of the central square, the town's silence descended upon them like a lead weight. The streets were deserted of vehicles, but filled with an unsettling stillness.

-Okay- Rachel said, opening the door and feeling the mountain chill hit her skin. She pulled an old leather-bound journal from her backpack, where she researched ancestral rites. -

-The town library is at the far end of the square. If the rumors are true, the records of the first settlers will explain why this place smells of ash and secrets.

George took her arm before she stepped completely out of the door. He looked into her eyes, feeling a pang of frustration that had been building up over the past few weeks: arguments about his skepticism, about the time she devoted to her hidden obsessions, about the invisible distance that seemed to grow between them despite the years they had spent together.

-Rachel… promise me we’ll investigate, find what you’re looking for, and leave before nightfall- George pleaded, his voice lowering, searching for an anchor that he felt was slipping.

Rachel met his gaze, feeling a strange, unusual warmth course through her veins despite the town’s chill. A subtle, almost wild smile curved her lips.

-I'm not promising you anything, George. This place is only just beginning to speak to us-

When Rachel finished this sentence, something stirred within her boyfriend, a feeling he had never experienced before; it simply seemed to burn inside. They returned to the truck, but something about Rachel and George was different. They looked for a hotel that might be open, and when they found the only one that seemed to be functioning, they went inside.

Upon entering, they saw a counter, and the friends pressed a kind of button that appeared to be used to summon the receptionist. It was very rustic and looked worn with age. The doorbell wasn't working properly, and that's when Jake felt a chill run down his spine. He felt uneasy because behind him was a middle-aged man, but not very expressive. He simply came out from behind them and said:

-Good afternoon, how can I help you?

Upon hearing this voice, the six friends felt a chill they couldn't quite explain.

Chapter 2:

Welcome to the Threshold of Shadow

El Hotel Lakeview fue lo más aterrador para mí y no sé por qué. : r/ silenthill

The facade of the "Threshold of Shadows" hotel rose before the plaza like a skeleton of fine wood and dark windows, reflecting the twilight of an endless afternoon. The badly rusted sign at the entrance hung by a single screw, swaying with a metallic creak that grew ever louder; in the distance, the mountain sloped down.

Upon crossing the threshold, the contrast with the outside was immediate: the air inside the lobby was strangely warm, heavy with a subtle aroma of rancid beeswax and dried flowers. A receptionist with an expressionless face and a static smile, after welcoming them and being told they required three rooms with double beds, handed them three sets of keys, completely antique, simply pointing to the stairs at the back. He also gave them some details about the schedules and meals.

As they ascended the creaking carpeted steps, the group began to disperse toward their respective rooms. At the end of the hallway, far from the tension that hung in the air, David and Sophie shared a moment of respite as they closed their bedroom door.

Sophie dropped her heavy travel backpack onto the bed and, with a thud, stretched her arms with an athletic flexibility that masked the tension in her jaw.

-This place smells like an old library and family secrets no one wants to tell-she remarked with a slight smile, though her eyes scrutinized every corner of the doorway with a tactical acumen uncharacteristic of someone who only thinks about sports.

David approached calmly, resting his hands on the back of a wooden chair. In an unusually cultured and measured tone of voice, unlike the casual facade he usually maintained in front of the group, he replied:

-The architecture is in the style of the late 19th century- These structures used to be built on limestone foundations to insulate against dampness, but here... the stone seemed to absorb the heat from the adjacent rooms. As if something beneath the floor were keeping the building at a constant temperature.

Sophie looked at him in surprise, a glimmer of genuine admiration shining in her eyes. She had always liked how David concealed his intellect for fear of not fitting in, but in moments like this, his analytical mind was a safe haven. Without a word, she crossed the room, approached him, and wrapped her arms around his neck, seeking his touch with a firm, conscious tenderness, a tangible reminder that, unlike what was happening in the rest of the hotel, between the two of them, the world was still real.

A few doors away, Cindy adjusted her glasses lenses while reviewing the architectural plans she had downloaded before entering the town on her tablet. Beside her, Jake stared at the ceiling with a seemingly distracted expression, nibbling on a granola bar.

-The local magnetic field has no logical explanation, Cindy- Jake murmured with astonishing calm, catching a pen she had reflexively let roll to the edge of the table before it hit the floor. “But what worries me isn’t the numbers on your screen, but the way the locals were looking at Rachel in the plaza. Like they knew her from before.”

Cindy nodded quickly, typing in a backup code.

-You’re right. And what’s worse: George is trying to rationalize every physical anomaly in the building, but his heart rate jumped 20 percent as we crossed the hall. We need to keep a close eye on the room at the end. Something’s not right with them.

At the end of the main corridor was the room assigned to Rachel and George. As she turned the iron key, the latch gave way with a dull thud that seemed to resonate with unusual force in the silence of the hallway.

The interior was spacious, dominated by a dark wooden bed with a carved headboard featuring intertwined Victorian motifs. But what immediately caught her attention was the room's atmosphere.

-It's... a bit too hot in here, don't you think?- George remarked, loosening the collar of his jacket and running a hand over his forehead, where a fine sheen of sweat was beginning to form. His voice was slightly hoarser than usual, disrupting his typically analytical composure.

Rachel didn't reply immediately. She had taken a step toward the center of the room, closing her eyes for a moment. Her skin felt strange: the cool mountain air they carried in their clothing seemed to dissipate upon contact with the threshold, replaced by a warm, dense current rising from the wooden floor.

-It's not just heat, George- Rachel whispered, slowly opening her eyes. Her gaze shifted to the carvings on the headboard. As he ran his fingers over the wood, he felt an imperceptible vibration, a rhythmic pulse that seemed to synchronize with his heartbeat.

from his own heart—. It was as if the room were breathing. As if the building were waiting for something.

George approached her to check the window, searching for a logical explanation for a possible malfunction in the old heating system or a poorly sealed air duct. However, as he stood beside her, the scent of wax and dried flowers intensified, mingling with a subtle perfume that didn't belong to either of them.

A thick silence settled between them. It wasn't the comfortable silence of their shared years, but one charged with a latent electricity. George looked at Rachel differently; the curve of her neck, the way the afternoon light filtered through the dusty glass, outlining her silhouette... A sudden, warm, nameless urgency began to sprout in his chest, defying the logic and skepticism that had always defined him.

Rachel felt it too. A magnetic tension pulling them together, erasing for a second the arguments of the past few months, the weariness of the journey, and the doubts about their future. Without a word, with an intensity neither of them could pinpoint, George reached out and pulled her close, feeling the outside world—the fog, the town, and the whispers in the hallway—fade away before the blind force of this sudden desire.

The air in the room grew heavy, almost unbreathable, charged with an invisible electricity that raised goosebumps. The shadows in the corners seemed to shrink, as if the space itself were holding its breath. George drew her toward him with unusual force, a possessive outburst that clashed with his usual composed demeanor. When Rachel looked up to respond to his touch, something within her had shifted. Her eyes, usually a warm brown, shone with a feverish, deep gleam, reflecting an almost unreal amber hue in the lamplight.

-George…-she murmured, her voice broken by a hoarse echo that wasn't entirely her own, a murmur that vibrated with a dense, ancient, and consuming desire.

The touch of their hands ceased to be the familiar caress of their shared years and became a searing friction. Every sense was heightened to its limit: the other's accelerated heartbeat resonated in their ears like a war drum, the scent of old wood and dried flowers became intoxicating, and the texture of skin beneath clothing felt like a cold burn.

There were no doubts or hesitations; the only thing that prevailed with overwhelming force was an insatiable, lustful, and boundless urgency that enveloped them completely, pushing them to surrender to a wild whirlwind where the outside world, the fog of Oakhaven, and any rational thought were reduced to ashes.

In that trance of utter surrender, where pleasure and darkness intertwined in a single feverish breath, their bodies melted into a blind desire, swept away by a supernatural, forbidden, even arcane force that whispered in the depths of their minds that they no longer belonged to this world.

Time seemed to crumble within those four walls. The urgency their bodies possessed was inexplicable; this consuming desire was not that of two people reuniting after an argument, but rather that of a ravenous force demanding complete surrender.

George completely lost control of his own analytical mind; every structured thought disintegrated, devoured by a tide of dense heat and a feverish fascination with Rachel's skin. He kissed her with an insatiable voracity, their senses incredibly heightened. The touch of every inch of fabric felt like living fire, and the sound of their shared breathing filled the entire space, resonating like an ancient echo from the depths of the earth.

Rachel, her amber eyes fixed on his, let the wild torrent sweep her away. No trace remained of the cautious investigator; instead, a primal, magnetic energy possessed her, driving her to seek contact with a desperate intensity. Each caress was a blind command, a feverish, unrestrained ebb and flow where pleasure became infinite, suspended in a spiral of abandon where identities merged and dissolved, demanding more and more in a surrender that erased everything that had existed before crossing the fog.

The climax of that unbridled desire was not an end, but an explosion of the senses that defied all logic. The entire room seemed to throb to the rhythm of their pulses, a wild frenzy where boundless desire became a blind, devouring force. George, completely devoid of reason, surrendered to lust. He was driven solely by primal urges and the burning need to merge with her.

Rachel, on the other hand, revealed large, sweeping fangs, biting possessively at her boyfriend's neck.

With his eyes glowing a deep, electric amber, he responded with the same unleashed intensity, an ancestral hunger consuming every ounce of his will.

The friction of their bodies, the indescribable echo of whispers, flew through the air without explanation, and the urgency of that savage act reached an absolute breaking point, a peak of emotions and senses where reality melted away, slowly disintegrating before plunging into the void.

The exhaustion was so drastic and absolute that it struck George like a leaden wall. His mind shut down abruptly, plunging him into a heavy, profound unconsciousness.

The grayish light of morning filtered through the shattered windowpanes, illuminating the wreckage.

George opened his eyes slowly, a throbbing headache drilling into his head and his body numb. He blinked, disoriented, trying to process where he was.

He lay on the bed, completely naked, surrounded by inexplicable chaos. A sharp pain shot through his neck, so he went to look in the mirror, and when he did, he glimpsed two fang marks on his jugular vein.

-What the hell? Rachel did this to me…

Beside him, Rachel began to stir, waking up with the same expression of utter confusion on her face, also without a single piece of clothing.

They looked around, and the air froze in their chests. The room looked as if a hurricane had swept through it: the solid headboard was splintered as if it had been struck with a sledgehammer, the curtains hung in tatters, the lamp lay shattered in a corner, and the walls showed deep scratches, like invisible claws that had tried to tear at the very structure of the building.

George sat up clumsily, feeling a terrifying emptiness in his mind. He tried to remember what had happened the night before, how they had gotten into that state, or at what point the room had become a battlefield. But there was nothing. A blank wall, an absolute abyss where the memories should have been.

-Rachel…-he managed to say, his voice dry and trembling, unlike his usual analytical detachment- What... what the hell happened here?

-I haven't the slightest idea, love, but we have to investigate.

Echoes in the Fog and Cracks in the Glass

The morning sun barely managed to filter through the dense fog that enveloped Oakhaven, like an opaque stain. The atmosphere in the hotel hallway was strangely heavy.

Cindy, tablet in hand, frowned as she checked the vibration and heat flow sensors she had strategically placed the night before along the baseboard.

-This doesn't make any scientific sense- Cindy whispered, quickly adjusting her glasses as she looked at the screen- The records show a spike in kinetic and thermal energy in Rachel and George's room. It peaked at exactly three in the morning. It felt as if the floor had absorbed a high-intensity impact.

Beside her, Jake nodded slowly, dropping an apple he was holding to catch it as it fell; his reflexes had always been impeccable.

-And look at the marks on the wood, right outside the door, Cindy. Someone scratched it hard- Jake said, nodding his chin, momentarily losing his usual absentminded demeanor to reveal a sharp insight. Something happened in there. You know we know our friends really well, so there’s definitely something wrong between them.

Now the question is: What is it? And why? We should at least make sure, don’t you think?

Without hesitation, the couple approached the back door. Cindy gave three sharp, firm knocks with her knuckles.

A few seconds of absolute silence passed before the lock turned. The door opened just a crack. On the other side, Rachel peeked out; she was already fully dressed; her hair was hastily pulled back, and her eyes held a tense expression. She was trying hard to hide it. Behind her, George could be seen in the background, stiffly adjusting his shirt, his face unusually pale. Moreover, for the warm weather, he wore a kind of bandana around his neck as if trying to conceal something beneath the fabric. It was a sort of Western-style bandana, like the one Woody from Toy Story wears every day; however, it was out of fashion. This worried them both greatly.

-Is everything alright here? We heard some unusual noises last night, and Cindy's sensors registered an anomaly- Jake said, placing a hand on the doorframe to block any attempt to close it abruptly.

Rachel forced a smile, feeling a pang of inexplicable irritation in her chest.

-We're perfectly fine, guys. It was just... a bad nightmare, and we accidentally broke a lamp. It’s nothing- Rachel replied, her tone sharp and uncharacteristic-

-What I do know is that we need to have breakfast and go to the public library. There are a lot of documents to review. How about we meet there in half an hour?

And without giving them a chance to reply, she closed the door gently but firmly.

Outside the room, Cindy and Jake stared at the door, completely confused and suspicious. They knew that a broken lamp didn’t explain the power surges, much less the strange vibrations that had shaken the floor.

MISTERIO EN EL INSTITUTO_11LHC_16JMS_25OSL.odt

Half an hour later, the group was inside the public library. The tall, dark oak bookshelves stood like monoliths, covered in dust and the cloying smell of old paper.

As George walked through the aisles with somewhat mechanical steps, a strange, dull irritation crept into his chest, making it hard to breathe and irritating him. He didn't understand what was happening to him or its origin. As expected, he tried to find many logical explanations for the situation, but he couldn't. This unsettled him.

Rachel, meanwhile, headed straight for the restricted section, located in the deepest and most mysterious part of the basement. Being such a perceptive girl, she was being guided by a visceral impulse that throbbed beneath her skin. Her eyes, although they had regained their normal color, held a feverish and hungry gleam. She was waiting to relive the moment from the previous night.

A few meters away, seated at a worm-eaten wooden study table, David and Sophie were reviewing a volume of local chronicles. These dated from the late 19th century.

Sophie carefully turned a page, her fingers brushing against the brittle edges. Beside her, David rested his elbow on the table, studying the engravings with meticulous attention.

-Look at this, Sophie- David murmured, his voice now intimate and cultured. “The records speak of the original founders of the town. According to these records, none of them disappeared due to an epidemic; rather—and this is what surprises me most—these accounts state that supposedly each of them abandoned their village.

Their surnames, voluntarily, after a series of "flesh purification" rituals.

Sophie looked up, meeting David's deep, dark eyes. Far from the carefree, athletic facade she usually projected, a spark of intelligence shone in her gaze. Without a word, she slid her hand across the table, intertwining her fingers with his.

David squeezed her hand firmly, returning a smile brimming with complicity and genuine affection. Their bond, built on years of mutual understanding and secret conversations, acted as an impenetrable shield against the corruption that hung in the air.

At the opposite end of the basement, the situation between Rachel and George was radically different.

Among shelves overflowing with manuscripts, they were searching for files on the first disappearances, but the silence between them was thick, sharp, and thick with a poisonous tension.

-You’re obsessed with finding mystical meanings in every symbol in this basement, Rachel- George blurted out, crossing his arms and feeling an irrational rage gnawing at him from within. He didn’t understand where it had come from; things hadn’t been like this before they arrived in town. Sometimes things are just old stone and cement. Why do you insist on ruining the trip with your occult theories?

Rachel turned sharply toward him. Her breathing quickened, and her eyes flashed a subtle amber, barely perceptible yet latent. A feverish, dark need coursed through her veins, demanding chaos, demanding to feel the unleashed fire of the previous night again.

-Ruin the trip?- Rachel replied in an icy voice, taking a step forward with unusual aggression- The only thing ruining the trip is your constant need to control everything, to rationalize absolutely everything, because you're terrified to admit that there are higher, inexplicable forces, forces your small, logical mind can't comprehend. And doesn't want to, either. But that's what's happening here, even if you don't want to admit it—he said, continuing his search for answers.

The arguments, which used to be intellectual debates or passing disagreements, had transformed into outbursts of accumulated resentment. The entities that dwelled beneath Oakhaven were feeding on exactly that: the small cracks, the unspoken reproaches, the contained frustration.

Each argument eroded another fragment of their shared identity, subtly pushing them to yearn once more for the chaotic, wild abandon of the previous night's possession; making them believe that only through that blind fire would they find peace, but without noticing that their souls were being slowly corrupted by the town's shadow.

The argument between Rachel and George began to escalate uncontrollably, fueled by a simmering fury that neither could justify. Their words, sharp and laden with reproaches about their years-long relationship, grew increasingly heated, their controlling obsessions echoing off the oak shelves in the basement.

-You always do the same thing, Rachel! You put your esoteric fantasies before any basic logic!- George spat, his fists clenched and his jaw tense, a tremor of uncontrollable anger coursing through his muscles.

Rachel took a step toward him, her chest heaving and her eyes flashing with increasingly intense amber light.

-And you prefer to blind yourself rather than admit that there are things that escape your damned scientific manual, George! You're suffocating me!-she screamed, her voice so visceral that it echoed in the darkest corners of the archive.

-I'm so angry you're like this!- Across the hallway, the sound of shouting stopped David and Sophie in their tracks. They were holding a faded manuscript with annotations in the margins. A few feet away, Cindy and Jake approached quickly, carrying the key document they had just unearthed.

-Guys, look at this. We found the record of the first settlers..." Cindy began, holding out the paper, but she stopped abruptly when she saw the scene.

David and Sophie stood beside her, wide-eyed, watching the argument between their friends. The four of them began to genuinely worry. They knew him too well, and they knew perfectly well that this wasn't an innocent fight. There was something deeply unsettling in the air. The way the shadows around the corners seemed to move toward them, the unnatural stiffness in George's posture, and above all, the feverish, hungry look in Rachel's eyes, which didn't reflect that of an angry girl, but rather that of a predator about to pounce on her prey.

-Hey... are you guys okay?- Jake interjected, scratching the back of his neck with a mixture of bewilderment and discomfort, losing by an instant. With his usual nonchalant air, he said

-You’re going a bit overboard, don’t you think?”

Sophie frowned, taking a cautious step forward. Although she tried to maintain her composure, her keen instincts screamed that something was off.

-George, your skin is completely pale and… your hands are shaking strangely- Sophie pointed out in a firm voice, trying to get his attention- And Rachel… you’ve never acted like this before, much less over a trivial difference of opinion.

He´s blinked a couple of times, as if trying to shake off some mental weight. He gritted his teeth and tried to regain his composure, though his voice sounded harsh and distant.

-Absolutely nothing’s wrong, Sophie. We’re just… dealing with some pent-up tension from the trip. Leave us alone for a moment-George replied, with a sudden coldness that left everyone stunned.

Rachel, for her part, looked away from her friends, but the fire in her eyes didn't go out. On the contrary: the anger with George, instead of distancing them, was opening the same dark door as the night before. The friction, the momentary hatred, and the frustration were perversely becoming the perfect fuel the entities needed to ignite their desire for possession.

Cindy stared at the document she held in her hands and then at the pair of friends. Her analytical mind immediately began connecting the dots, even though the information seemed impossible to believe.

-We found something else in this library record- Cindy said her tone truly serious; this made the silence thick.

-The files say that the first victims of Oakhaven didn't die of hunger, much less from any disease. They simply, overnight, for no apparent reason, began arguing over trivial matters and eroding their emotional bonds.

David looked at George and Rachel with genuine concern. After this revelation, he shook Sophie's hand, trying to reconnect with reality.

-Guys... what's happening to you isn't just a lovers' quarrel. The whole town is getting into your heads," David warned seriously.

But Rachel and George's minds were so clouded by the invisible influence of the fog and the lingering memory of the previous night's wild pleasure that their friends' words were barely heard.

The argument between Rachel and George stopped abruptly when Cindy and David arrived with the old document in their hands, but the air between the couple remained charged with a strange, almost palpable electricity.

Cindy frowned, adjusting her glasses, as she glanced between her two friends and the dusty paper.

-We found something curious in the founders’ records-Cindy began, in her usual analytical tone, though a hint of doubt crossed her voice- It talks about how the isolation of this valley and the atmospheric pressure alter the behavior of visitors. They say that accumulated stress and prolonged contact cause severe neurological disturbances… It’s a kind of collective hysteria; according to them, it can irreparably affect one’s perception of reality and unleash unusual aggression.”

Jake crossed his arms…

-Or maybe the coffee in this town has some chemical that expired in 1990,” Jake joked, letting out a short, light laugh to break the tension. “Come on, guys. You’ve been together for five years; it’s normal that this trip, in the middle of nowhere, would push you to your limits.

Sophie, however, didn’t seem so convinced. She had exchanged a quick, knowing glance with David, and her sharp instincts told her there was something deeper beneath the surface of the room's atmosphere. Although she didn't want to alarm them, the pallor on George's face and the unusually intense gleam in Rachel's eyes didn't fit with a simple lovers' quarrel.

Verbos emocionales, un modo de expresar necesidades y de conectar

I don't know, Jake- Sophie replied- her voice soft but firm, taking a cautious step forward. It's one thing to be irritated by the trip, and another... I don't know, the way they're looking at each other. They seem about to explode, but in a way that doesn't make sense. It's like the atmosphere in this place is infecting them with something we can't see.

George clenched his jaw, feeling the blood pound in his ears. Cindy's theory about atmospheric pressure and stress had given him a fleeting logical anchor, something to cling to in order to mask the tide of confusion and frustration that was burning inside him.

-Cindy's right. We’re exhausted, the mountain air is heavy, and this research trip is taking its toll-George interrupted- his voice harsh and distant, brooking no argument, as he tried to regain his composure. It’s nothing more than exhaustion.

Rachel remained silent, neither defending herself nor continuing the recriminations, but the way she averted her gaze toward the shadows in the corridor left a lingering impression.

An uneasy feeling hung in the air. His friends didn't know exactly what was happening to them, and even they couldn't quite grasp the dense, silent fire that was beginning to spread in their minds, but the suspicion that Oakhaven harbored a secret, far darker than they could have imagined… settled among them like an invisible warning.

The echo of heavy, shuffling footsteps on the wooden floor broke the tension in the basement. From the shadows of the main hallway emerged the librarian: a lanky man with hunched shoulders and skin so pale it seemed translucent in the flickering light. His smile, fixed and too wide, didn't quite reach his glassy eyes.

-The library is closing. Visiting hours ended five minutes ago- the man croaked, his voice rasping like dry leaves being crushed. It's not wise to stay here when the mist starts rolling down from the mountain- The air grew... heavy.

Rachel startled, blinking several times as if emerging from a deep trance, while George ran a trembling hand across his forehead, feeling a sudden migraine pounding in his temples. Despite the suspicions swirling in the air about theories of atmospheric pressure and mass hysteria, accumulated fatigue and the oppressive atmosphere of the place made the group reluctantly accept it.

Outside, the town of Oakhaven seemed to have sunk into a deathly silence. In the only open restaurant in the area, lit by constantly flickering gas lamps, the atmosphere among the six friends was tense.

Sophie and David tried to maintain a light conversation about their notes, searching for safe ground, while Cindy discreetly tapped on her tablet, trying unsuccessfully to decipher what the area's thermal sensors were registering as circular anomalies around the hotel.

At the far end of the table, Rachel and George barely exchanged a word. The distance between them seemed measured in abysses. George clutched his glass of water so tightly his knuckles turned white; he was battling a dull irritation and an inexplicable desire that burned within him for no apparent reason. Rachel, for her part, stared blankly at the reflection in the window, feeling that every second in Oakhaven was tearing an invisible thread from what used to be her own identity.

After dinner, as they crossed the hotel threshold, the atmosphere seemed to rise sharply. There was no need for words or to resume the argument; the poison of suspicion and mental fatigue gave way to a blind urgency. Each felt a little dizzy and they decided to go to their rooms to rest.

Among the four friends, David and Sophie felt a bit heated, while Jake and Cyndy simply stared at each other with intense desire in their eyes, without a word. However, with Rachel and George, something far more sinister was in store; the entity that inhabited the town's underground had struck its strongest blow yet. In a fit of possession far more violent and intense than the previous night, they both completely lost control of their actions. They didn't even make it to bed; the moment they closed the door, they transformed, utterly lost and unrestrained.

Unbridled desire seized their bodies in a savage frenzy, a blind vortex where the outside world ceased to exist. Every sense intensified to the point of pain, and in the paroxysm of that furious surrender, their minds shattered, burying memories, affections, and promises beneath a layer of absolute oblivion.

The air inside Rachel and George's room had grown thick, almost unbreathable, charged with the heavy magnetism of midnight. The possession wasn't a mere infatuation; it was a relentless onslaught that swept away the last vestiges of their individuality.

Trapped in a loop of unbridled passion and an increasingly unhealthy possessiveness, desire became an invisible chain. George clung to her with a feverish, domineering urgency, erasing every logical thought, every doubt, and every memory of his life outside Oakhaven to melt into a trance where there was no longer a "you" or an "I," but a single mass hungry for sensation.

Rachel, her eyes fixed on the gloom and glowing with an intense amber light, responded with the same blind voracity, surrendering entire fragments of her soul and her memory in exchange for the ephemeral fire the town injected into their veins.

The connection between them had become twisted; It was no longer love that bound them, but a parasitic dependence born of pleasure that completely isolated them from reality.

A few meters away, in the dimness of the reception area, the librarian hung up an old Bakelite telephone connected to a cable.

or to a local network of rusty cables. On the other end of the line, a slow, raspy voice answered instantly.

-This is the West Sector speaking-the man whispered, glancing down the corridor of bedrooms with a calculating smile- The process is progressing with the main couple. Their mental resilience has completely disintegrated; they no longer remember who they were before crossing the border. The cycle is consuming them quickly.

-And the other four?- the voice on the other end asked, its tone icy.

The librarian’s smile vanished, his brow furrowing as he recalled Cindy’s analytical gaze, Sophie’s tactical wariness, Jake’s sharp wit, and David’s calm demeanor.

-They’re nowhere near that. They stick together, question too much, and analyze the pieces. They still have their anchors,” the man replied with disdain.

From the receiver, the order was clear and sharp:

-Then do something- Isolate the perimeter, close off all road exits, and increase the pressure on them. If they don't break from desire, they'll have to break from fear.

A few meters away, in the adjoining rooms, the same invisible tide was attempting to fracture the rest of the group with identical brutality.

David and Sophie felt the temperature in their bedroom rise suddenly, accompanied by a muffled murmur in the walls that seemed to incite abandonment and loss of control. However, instead of letting themselves be swept away by the current of fury and blind impulse, the deep respect and communication they had built over years became their bulwark.

-Look at me, Sophie- David murmured firmly, cupping her face in his hands as the heat threatened to overwhelm them. Her brilliant mind, usually hidden behind her relaxed demeanor, instantly grasped the trap: the people wanted them to lose control of their actions to steal their will. We’re not from here. This isn’t ours.

Despite the tension coursing through her body and the sudden heat emanating from her skin, Sophie gripped David’s arms with the tactical strength of an athlete trained to withstand extreme fatigue. Her breath ragged, but her mind clear, she channeled all her determination to counter the energy that sought to possess them. Together, their hands intertwined, recalling every promise, every shared laugh, and who they were before stepping into the fog, they managed to repel the onslaught of entities, resisting with unwavering willpower.

In the other room, Cindy and Jake experienced a similar struggle. Cindy's tablet sensors began to beep with flashing lights, warning of a hostile energy field attempting to disrupt her concentration.

Jake, abandoning his usual air of absentmindedness, used his reflexes and sharp intuition to move the furniture blocking the door and keep Cindy focused. By repeating details of their research aloud and anchoring themselves in mutual banter, they slowed the advance of the possession, demonstrating that the group's unity and clarity were the only real shield against the darkness of Oakhaven.

Ashes of Memory and the Master Plan

The morning light filtering through the shattered glass of the room revealed not just a destroyed space, but the reflection of two souls on the verge of collapse.

Rachel and George lay on the floor, surrounded by rubble. When they opened their eyes, the fog in their minds was so thick they could barely recall their own surnames. Their faces reflected a distant, empty coldness, as if life had been sucked from within them.

-Rachel…-George whispered, his voice breaking, a thread of identity refusing to be extinguished completely. This... this isn't us. They're erasing us.

Rachel blinked, and for a second, the former esoteric investigator recognized the abyss into which they had fallen. She squeezed George's hand with what little strength she had left, knowing that time was running out and that, with the coming nightfall, their will would vanish forever, turning them into mere automatons of the town.

-You're right, love, I'm scared. We have to act fast. I don't want to get lost like this, I don't want to."

-I'd rather die than let that happen," he said, holding Rachel tightly. "We don't have time to lose. Let's go.

They both stood up, took a shower, put on fresh clothes, and went out to find their friends. They were the only ones who could help them stop this whole mess before it was too late.

Minutes later, in the next room, the group had gathered, their faces grim. Cindy reviewed the data on her tablet, Sophie crossed her arms with an implacable tactical rigidity, and David and Jake guarded the door. When Rachel and George entered, staggering and with vacant stares, the gravity of the situation hit them all.

-Last night they tried to break us too- Sophie said firmly, her gaze fixed on her friends, noticing how their very essence faded for a few seconds. "But we resisted because we knew who we were. You still have time to come back.

-We don't have much time- Cindy warned, sliding a schematic diagram across the coffee table. I analyzed the thermal frequencies and the files we managed to recover from the library. The entities don't just inhabit the hotel's subsoil; they feed off an energy core located beneath the main plaza, an ancient altar where the founders sealed the pact of blood and oblivion.

David adjusted his posture, abandoning any semblance of relaxed demeanor to reveal his sharp intellect.

-Running away won’t do any good. If we cross the road with the curse still active, the town will trap us again, or worse, leave us wandering in the fog like the locals-David stated with absolute certainty- We have to nip the problem in the bud. Destroy the central altar to cut off the town’s power source forever.

The plan was meticulously crafted, combining the skills of each of the four friends who remained steadfast:

-First things first-Sophie said- we need a distraction, and a good one. Jake and I will use my reflexes and his physical strength to divert the attention of the locals (the identityless ‘shells’), leading them to the opposite end of town, setting off alarms, and creating chaos in the side streets.” On the other hand, Cindy will decipher the access code to the plaza's underground level. We'll use its magnetic temperature data," Jake said.

-This will guide David to deactivate the altar's protective barriers with the ancient texts.

-Finally-George said- we'll deliver the final blow, the 'Checkmate.' With the few remaining glimmers of lucidity, Rachel and I should be the ones to carry that amulet, that source of containment power, the one that, according to Cyndy's statistics, is well hidden in the library, to physically break the altar's core.

-I'll use its original ribbon, reciting the rite that the first ones apparently used to perform this sacrifice. That, along with the genuine memory of how I truly fell in love with George, will be my shield and anchor against the entities' final onslaught."

-Very well, Rachel, but there's something else we must consider-Jake said- If we fail, we'll all be lost together- he said, looking at Rachel and George with unexpected seriousness- So they'd better remember who they are, because tonight we're going to burn this damn town to the ground.

-Don't worry, over my dead body I'll let this destroy us. This is personal now. They messed with my girl and with me too. I won't show any mercy, said George, his fury palpable.

-Excellent, let's move, we don't have time to lose- Sophie said, and everyone began to do their part of the bargain.

Chapter 5 and Final:
Ashes of Redemption and The Price of Return

The fog of Oakhaven seemed solid, compressing around the main square like a leaden shroud. The air reeked of sulfur and burnt paper.

The plan was crumbling with every step: the locals, silhouettes with empty faces, advanced en masse, blocking the entrances, and internal tension had taken its toll on the group. Minutes earlier, the friction and recriminations incited by the entities had provoked a fierce argument between David and Sophie, and a tactical, almost fatal, misstep—the one that nearly resulted in the deaths of Cindy and Jake.

But at the last second, clinging to their common purpose, they had all regrouped, forming a human wall around Rachel and George.

In the center of the square, on the cracked limestone altar, the ground throbbed with a viscous, dark pulse. It was barely a minute before midnight, the moment when the final possession would seal Rachel and George's minds forever, leaving them empty shells like the rest of the town.

-I can't anymore... the darkness is winning, George-Rachel's voice cried out- her eyes flashing a feverish amber as she knelt on the stone, feeling her memories vanish like smoke.

George, his body numb and his mind shattered, fought against the abyss. He was about to give in, to surrender to the tide of pleasure and oblivion the entity demanded. But in that precise moment of utter collapse, a flash crossed his mind: not a logical thought, but the purest and most beautiful memory of his life. He saw Rachel's face, under the university lights, that night he had confessed his feelings to her, after dating for a couple of months. The sparkle in her eyes as she spoke of poetry, the laughter they had shared in the rain years before.

A silent miracle ignited an unquenchable spark within him.

With a superhuman effort, George stretched out his trembling hand and grasped Rachel's with desperate force. She felt the warmth of that unbreakable bond, an anchor that defied the curse. Together, channeling the last fragments of their identity and holding the containment amulet, they rose and struck the altar's core with all their might.

-I won't...let...you...fall into darkness...my love...over my dead body

A blinding flash of white light erupted from the earth's core.

The spell was broken with a deafening crash. The ground above Oakhaven creaked, the town's wooden walls disintegrated into particles of dust, and the dense fog dissipated in an instant, evaporating in a gust of clean wind.

The empty figures of the locals exhaled a collective sigh before peacefully dissolving into the light, finally freeing hundreds of souls trapped for decades.

Epilogue:
The Scars of Return

The sun shone brightly on the federal highway as the van crossed the boundary where the mist had once begun. Oakhaven was now nothing more than a smoking crater covered in gray ash.

They were alive. They had won. But the price of defying the darkness had not come without a price.

Months later, in her city apartment, Rachel browsed the books on her shelf with a wistful smile, though she knew that some pages of her memory would never be written again; small gaps, blurred faces from her childhood, and fragments of her past that the town had taken forever remained empty.

George, sitting beside her, grappled with the same silent shadow: flashes of intermittent amnesia that required sticky notes on the refrigerator to remind him of everyday details.

They were never quite the same again. However, they learned to live with the invisible ghosts of what they had lost and with the dull echo of a night that no therapy could completely erase; but whenever doubt or cold tried to creep into their home, all they had to do was intertwine their hands, recognizing in each other's touch the absolute miracle of having survived the infernal fire. This was the only thing that allowed them to remember, again and again, who they truly were.

The End
