Imagine a world where the goverment implement a rule where single people are only allowed to have sex in a single night of the year.

Killer Concept For The Wrong Film

One Night Only is a movie that was designed to be a dystopian setting where the world is normal as it is, but only single people are restricted to have sex and only they can do in a single night on year. That‘s rough, but also, instead of explaining more of the premise, the story follows Owen, played by a decent Callum Turner who owns a pizza shop and it‘s encouraged by his mother to enjoy the night where everyone can have sex without doing something illegal, but in the way, he meets Allie, played by Monica Barbaro, and in a course of a single day, everything happens to this characters.

The concept is amazing on paper, but on screen it‘s not fully explored, and instead of giving answers to us, it keeps dragging the storyline to the point that it becomes dumb.

This Could Be A Good Rom-Com

One Night Only works a normal rom-com, giving th usual cliches, but also has heart, magic and some good performances and chemistry from the lead actors that mantain this piece afloat.

The movie creates a premise that should change the people, then refuses to show how that people actually are. So, what happens when someone breaks the rules, because couples do need to have intimacy, why it is illegal? They are going to arrest every single people in the whole country for that? 

So… MANY. Questions.

The Main Issue

For a night that only single people could have sex… it felt… normal?  Everyone could go crazy in this night, but we didn‘t see much of this chaos, the madness, and the importance of the goverment‘s rules.

The movie toned down the sex scenes… for a whole concept that is essentially about having sex. This feels like a complete different film. 

But…

One Night Only despite his flaws, it‘s a good date night movie to take someone to see this movie. Has some jokes that are genuinely funny, unbelievable cameos, and Callum Turner finally decides to stop vacationing with Dua Lipa and gives a decent performance as Owen, a guy who knows he is good-looking, but also he is a good guy, and apparently girls are attracted to bad guys, and he has a inner conflict during the movie.

From the other side, Monica Barbaro plays Allie, a young woman who is trying to get laid, but also wants with someone that feels a connection, she doesn‘t just want sex, he wants to feel real and has meaning, that she wakes up the next day, and they cuddle. 

From that standpoint, the movie is good, but Will Gluck directed this like a spin-off of The Purge, and feels like something was lacking the entire running time.

Final Thoughts

One Night Only is a movie about finding the right person, while the goverment does crazy things, and, people are apparently normal in the night that every single people can have legal sex with anyone.
