He Bled Neon (Kirsch, 2026) Review: A Flashy and High-Paced Gangster Thriller, in an Unexpected Way

General Reviews

Las Vegas, also known as “Sin City,” the place to go for premium 24 hour resorts, gambling and nightlife. Though located in the Nevada desert, everyone knows Las Vegas for the strip. The flashing lights, the continuous music and noise, and no one ever sleeps. What most people do not think of is the outskirts of the strip. Where does the normalcy of every day life take place? This idea and area of Vegas means a lot to filmmaker Drew Kirsch. In fact, so much so that in his feature-length film debut, he crafted a whole film set in Vegas, but away from the hustle and bustle of the strip.

Drew Kirsch has years of experience in directing, from the numerous music videos he has helped make possible. Through his prior knowledge and a brilliant idea, shot in just the proper time length, He Bled Neon is a fun and flashy thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. For his first ever feature-length film, He Bled Neon premiered at the 2026 SXSW in Austin, Texas. A fitting festival for a film that could please so many members of an audience such as this.

Ethan (Joe Cole) had moved away from home, but after learning his brother’s death might truly have been a murder, he must return to Vegas to uncover the truth. Ethan and his brother were street kids, but upon escaping their hometown, Ethan is now living well-off in Los Angeles and engaged to the daughter of his real estate firm’s boss. After the funeral, before returning home, a text saying his brother overdosed brings Ethan back into the underbelly of Vegas. With help from his old friends, they work together to uncover the truth about his brother’s murder, and maybe unveil something more.

He Bled Neon brings together an unlikely ensemble. Yet, the way in which their chemistry and banter flow so well together fits right into their respective roles. Alongside Cole stars Rita Ora, Marshawn Lynch, and Ismael Cruz Cordova. Each brings something special to their character and also unexpected. From their past as individuals, it might be surprising to see them take on this thriller. But as the film unfolds you realize how well the casting was done and the talent they have in working together and bringing their all.

Where the true power lies in He Bled Neon is through the storytelling and composition. It turns into a thriller with elements used for creating a music video. The setting of Vegas seems so fitting for what Kirsch does within the film. Reminding everyone where they are, he throws in the idea of ‘neon blood’ in his title. Hinting here that there is a reason for it, your viewing experience is heightened by trying to figure out the mystery too. He combines style, music and passion into this ensemble thriller piece, becoming visually appealing and emotionally hooking.

For a first time feature-length film, He Bled Neon goes beyond expectations. While its cast provide the entertainment and emotional factors, it lies truly in Kirsch’s talent and keen eye where the visual experience comes from. Without the creativity and colour pulling the audience into this world, it might not have been so successful. As you watch, you will feel like you are there and you yourself will want to get to the bottom of the mystery, while still surviving as well.
