Project Hail Mary Is A Beautiful Masterpiece
General ReviewsProject Hail Mary is the latest movie from the directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller and stars Ryan Gosling, Sandra Huller and Lionel Bryce
The story follows Ryland Grace, a junior high science teacher turned scientist-astronaut, who wakes up from a coma with amnesia on a spaceship, only to realize he is the sole survivor on a desperate, one-way mission to save Earth from an extinction-level threat caused by a sun-dimming microorganism

It‘s One Of The Best Movies Of The Year
Project Hail Mary is outstanding in every sense of the way. Have never read the book, but I found that it‘s a close adaptation, and I‘m happy to hear that. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, known for the Spider-Verse films, crafted a beautiful piece of art, where the story takes into new heights, and in a running time of 2 hours and 36 minutes, the pace never gets drown out and it‘s emotionally connected to the core of the characters.
It‘s structured in a way that script flows as a flashback and jumping to present moments, but those pieces are connected through a great storytelling, because you will never feel that gets repetitive or overbearing.
You Will Cry
I didn‘t expect to cry in this movie, but the emotional element is persistent throught the final act of the movie, and by the ending, it hits you hard. A powerful message about friendship, and how survival is essential, but also, what are you willing to do?
Ryan Gosling plays Ryland Grace, an awkward teacher that is an intelligente neuroscientist and decifres a way to save Earth, but also he has some insecurity issues that prevents to be the brave man that he is. Gosling nails every part of his character, bringing a lot of nuance and vulnerability, and flexing his comedic chops that we all know more from him, and some unexpected singing moments. Is one of his best performances to date.
Sandra Huller plays Eva Stratt, a ruthless leader of the goverment that she isn‘t afraid to make tough decisions to ensure the safety of Earth, Huller plays this role as she own it, she is menacing in the role, although she is a very good singer, you will see why.

Balance Between Drama and Humor
The film introduces Rocky, an alien engineer from the Planet Erid, and while the film takes it‘s time to search for his right voice. The decision was funny, and there‘s a few voice cameos that will make you laugh a lot. But, Rocky becames instantly a fan-favorite, because it‘s written with such sweetness.
The balance between drama and humor is one of the strongest aspects of the film, it‘s a hard thing to do, and they nailed it to the degree that doesn‘t feel overpopulated with jokes, but also balances the drama elements in a compelling way.
It‘s Stunning
The cinematography in this film is amazing, bringing a lot of visuals to the screen that the format 70mm is well used, but the good thing about this movie is how they approach this film without the use of green screen, and you can see that the production design is made from scratch to feel the raw and intensity of the outer space.
The music is also another character in the film, the pieces created by Daniel Pemberton is beautiful, bringing as well known-songs to the mix and that fits perfectly into the core of the scenes.

Conclusion
Project Hail Mary is indeed a masterpiece, while the movie will resonate with audiences, there‘s always an element that people will find the story as not as compelling, but that‘s an entitled opinion. For now, I can promise that you will dive in this movie as you were IN THE FILM, and for the movie standards nowdays, that is a very hard thing to do.
Opens in theaters in March 20.
