Mickey 17 Odyssey
General ReviewsMickey 17: Robert Pattinson and Bong Joon-ho’s Wild Sci-Fi Odyssey
Released on March 7, 2025, Mickey 17 marks the highly anticipated return of Academy Award-winning director Bong Joon-ho (Parasite). This dark science-fiction comedy stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, a desperate man who escapes crushing debts on Earth by signing up for a specialized colony mission to the frozen planet of Niflheim.
The Premise: Live, Die, Repeat
Mickey is an "Expendable"—a disposable employee whose job is to perform the colony's most lethal tasks. When he dies, his consciousness and memories are uploaded into a newly "printed" body, allowing him to resume work as if nothing happened.
The plot kicks into high gear when Mickey 17 survives a presumed-deadly accident only to return to base and find that Mickey 18 has already been printed. In this dystopian future, "multiples" are a capital offense; if discovered, both versions must be destroyed.
A Masterclass in Range
Robert Pattinson delivers a dual performance that critics have hailed as a highlight of his career. Using distinct voices—a high-pitched nasal whine for the timid Mickey 17 and a more aggressive tone for the brash Mickey 18—Pattinson effectively plays against himself in scenes that balance slapstick humor with existential dread.
Supporting Cast & Social Satire
Bong Joon-ho uses the film to skewer familiar targets like corporate exploitation and authoritarianism:
Mark Ruffalo & Toni Collette: Play Kenneth and Ylfa Marshall, the megalomaniacal leaders of the expedition. Their performances are broad and satirical, with Ruffalo’s character often compared to a "Trumpian" cult leader.
Naomi Ackie: Plays Nasha, Mickey’s love interest and moral anchor, providing a grounded emotional core to the chaotic narrative.
Steven Yeun: Portrays Timo, Mickey's "questionable" friend whose betrayal leads Mickey to the Expendable program in the first place.
Production and Themes
Visuals: Cinematographer Darius Khondji captures the "industrial gloom" of the colony and the stark, white expanses of Niflheim.
Creatures: The planet is inhabited by "Creepers"—giant, roly-poly-like organisms that the humans initially view as monsters but are revealed to have their own intelligence.
Philosophy: Beyond the laughs, the film explores the "Ship of Theseus" paradox: if you are reprinted 17 times, are you still the same person?.
While some critics found the film's 137-minute runtime slightly overstuffed with themes, most agree that Mickey 17 is a "bonkers" and refreshingly original blockbuster that prioritizes artistic vision over franchise safety.
