The Bride! Is What Happens When You Go Unhinged in... The Bad Way

General Reviews

The Bride! is directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal and stars Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, Peter Sasgaard and Jake Gyllenhaal.

The story follows Frankenstein as he asks Dr. Euphronius to help create a companion. They give life to a murdered woman as the Bride, sparking romance, police interest, and radical social change.

It‘s Not a Very Good Movie

The Bride! was born with ambition, but it got lost in the execution. Maggie Gyllenhaal is an accomplished director, she gives every scene a new breath of life, and she can manage a good framing, but she is not the right choice to handle this project. The film want us to remind that she is still a woman, and brings a lot of current themes to the story, and sometimes it lands, sometimes it doesn‘t.

There‘s a clear message that the director wants to convey, but the film gets so repetitive What the film doesn‘t do justice is the clear balance between having a clear ambition for the story to the execution on how the audience will perceive it.

The Performances

Jessie Buckley brings his best to the role, she‘s unhinged, crazy, and bloody visceral, but the story doesn‘t go anywhere with the character, and Buckley tries her best to sell his part with a muddled script.

Christian Bale is always a pleasure to bring his talent to the screen and his iteration of Frankenstein is admirable.  The entire cast is excellent in the film, there‘s no doubt of that.

It Has No Clear Voice

The Bride didn‘t decide what it wants to be. A lot of comparasions with Joker 2 was being mentioned, but I think what the movie accomplishes is the style of the film, the production design and the technical aspects. But, the film looks like Baz Luhhrmann decided to do a version of Batman in a way.

Maggie Gyllenhaal tried to reinvent the story, adding a bunch of themes and balance the story to make it watchable. But, she got lost in the idea in the process and the film stumbles a lot, until the final minutes of the movie.

Conclusion

The Bride! will cause a lot of controversy between the audience, some people will love it, some people will hate it, but at the end, the film tries to stand his ground with the message, but it gets lost between the horrible sound mixing.

At least, the IMAX was good.

Dang, harsh words. I think I'll watch it this weekend, so let's wait and see, maybe I'll end up agreeing with you. I honestly don't expect much in terms of script, but yeah, the performances should be top notch.
