The Perfect Dad Film - Crime 101

General Reviews

Crime 101 is directed by Barry Layton and stars Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Halle Berry, Barry Keoghan and Nick Nolte

The story follows an elite jewel thief executing high-stakes heists along the 1011 freeway. He is pursued by a relentless detective while becoming entangled with a crazy insurance broker and a dangerous rival.

It‘s a Sunday Dad Film

Crime 101 is a thrilling movie that combines a great storyline, nuanced performances, Mark Ruffalo playing a cop, again, and Halle Berry showing us why she was the perfect Miss Universe. The film has vibes of a Sunday Morning Film that your Dad is binge-watching with a beer and some nuts.

The film delivers on the promise that the huge cast is there to make it an impactful story, and from the beginning, the story doesn‘t dissapoint in that.

It has a 90‘s action movie vibe

James, is a high-end thief who makes his living by being patient and strategic. He is not violent, he is subtle, and does his job perfectly. Like most criminals, his own strategic plans starts to fall apart, until the police realizes the clues and connects them. James begins a relationship with Sharon, a woman who crashes his bosse‘s car into him, and decides to invite her to dinner, but he is unable to let himself to tell his past or something to her.

Nick Nolte plays the main boss in the film, in charge of James and Barry Keoghan‘s character that is pulling the strings from behind the scenes, the 90‘s vibe is all around in this movie. The performances are what this film stands out the most, Chris Hemsworth gives a great subtle performance, he is slowly becoming good at selecting roles, Mark Ruffalo loves to play policeman, but he is also too damn good. Monica Barbaro is excellent as Sharon, although she doesn‘t appear as much. Barry Keoghan is great as always, and Halle Berry is always a pleasure to see her on screen.

The Weak Aspects

Crime 101 has an incredible and sharp cinematography, diving into a great direction by Barry Layton, who gives every frame a breath of fresh air. But, sadly, some parts are not as good as others.

The pacing in this film is a major issue, clocking at 2 hours 20 minutes, the film could be easily be less than that, but decides to put every detail and storyline in the running time. It‘s never boring, but there a few scenes that could been trimmered down.

Another aspect is Nick Nolte‘s character he is displayed as a major big villain, after a confrontation by James, but after that, his character dissapears and is never shown or mentioned again.

Conclusion

Crime 101 is one of those thriller action movies that rarely gets made anymore, and this gives all the things to succeed, and they even plant some seeds to make a sequel out of it. But as Dad Film, this is gold.

Alex, you took my article title!!! Lol. I agree with you on most of your points, though. I found this movie very entertaining and it was great to see Halle Berry back on the big screen. And yea the Nick Nolte character was a bit underutilized. However, I quite liked the pacing! Especially the lead-up to the movies finale... I was on the edge of my seat
