Terminator 2
General ReviewsTerminator 2
I was born in the eighties, and if you asked me for a movie that defined my generation, several films would pop into my mind; many would fulfill the request. But there’s one that especially impacts me. It’s a little of many things, even though it is classified as an action sci-fi movie. And the movie is Terminator 2. As the name indicates, it’s a sequel to a previous movie. Here, we can recognize many situations that make this movie memorable. It’s a futuristic movie about robots, which is a good hook, also conveys messages about connections, destiny, love, and a cause greater than life.
Having seen the prequel is not a prerequisite, but it could help you understand the context better and what I’m referencing here. John Connor is a teen who is destined to be an important person for humanity in the future. He has been growing up in foster homes, because his mother is kept in mental institutions as a deranged woman due to what happened in the early movie. He is a young rebel with bad behavior, lacking the love of a mother and a fatherly figure.
When the Terminator comes to kill him because he is a menace, because he will become a leader of human resistance against machines in the future. Everything gets confusing and agitated when another robot similar to the one in the first movie comes to do the opposite, save him. Here, the movie gets action-packed and entertaining. And we can see how an emotionless robot awakens admiration and respect for a fatherly figure in the renegade teen, John. At the end of the movie, the robot sacrifices for John’s future self, destroying himself, resembling some signal of human emotion or maybe just doing what he was programmed to do. Maybe A.I could replicate real human emotions, but it’s up to you to get to a conclusion if you want.
This movie is a rollercoaster of action-packed scenes, very fun to watch. Now, years before, and with more maturity, I can enjoy the movie with another perspective I hadn’t considered before. A very recommended movie that never gets old and is in accordance with today's projected advances in robotics and A.I.
