VIFF´25: Tuner is the New Baby Driver
General ReviewsTuner is directed by Daniel Roal l in his film debut and stars Leo Woodall, Jay Reno and Dustin Hoffman and follows the story of a gifted piano tuner's skills for tuning pianos lead him to discover an unexpected aptitude for cracking safes, turning his life upside down.

This film is the New Baby Driver
Tuner is a film with heart and soul, because it feels like a combination of Baby Driver and Whiplash, it feels in the tone and the pacing. But what makes this film special is the performance by Leo Woodall, who offer some of his best work to date and the chemistry with Dustin Hoffman, even though he doesn‘t appear too much, is oustanding.
Tuner is about Niki White, a man who can tune pianos for a living, but he has a disease in his hearing that he needs to put some kind of ear noise cancellation and uses headphones when he enters a big noise enviroment and he uses his special ability to hear beyond to cracking safes, but that path leads him into a dangerous territory.
The performances
Leo Woodall, who is known for his work in the TV series One Day and The White Lotus, now he has jump into the movie world and he‘s here to stay, because he is the best part of the movie, leading the film with much capabalities and carrying the entire film with his perfomance is truly something special. Dustin Hoffman also has a great role in it.

It needs more attention
Shot in Toronto under 2 million dollars and it shows in the filmmaking that Daniel Rohan uses, but is the way to show that doesn‘t matter if you don‘t have the biggest cinematography, as long as the story is good, the structure and the ending, you‘re golden.
Tuner crafted an original premise with a banger ending that will leave you when Whiplash once first premiered. It‘s one of those films that needs your complete attention to grab you into a nice good sounding ride.
After this, maybe, I should start to tune pianos 😅
Opens in theaters in December.
