I saw Heathers.

General Reviews

I must say that I found one of my favorite coming-of-age movies.

The actress Winona Ryder screaming ''Why you are such a mega bitch?''

This time I'm writing about movies I like to watch, which many of them are a mix of genres that can't be classified into one, but they stand out for their black humor.

I'm at the stage where I want to watch this type of movie, which, without any shame, is a coming-of-age story. I didn't know what to expect with Heathers, but I'm glad I watched it because I didn't want to at first, by only having the promotional image as a reference… I opt to not watch trailers or read reviews of movies, i prefer by far to immerse myself in the story without any preamble or ideas of what will happen, or even what it's about. Not every movie I watch is excellent, but without expectations, I'm glad I came across Heathers because it was a pleasant surprise.

The story is about Veronica (Winona Ryder), who is part of the most popular girls' group at school (all of them are named Heather). She falls in love with a sociopathic boy who influences her to do terrible things.

SPOILERS:

What did I like?

1. How the story gradually becomes darker and more sinister without losing any of its comedy. It's true that the quality of its jokes, references to 1980s American pop culture, and the year it was made (2010s) fluctuates. Although I think that happens all the time, some jokes or sequences are funnier than others.

2. Winona Ryder and Christian Slater's performances: They have great chemistry and a very natural synergy. I would defend that Christian's performance makes sense; when you consider that his character is a sociopath and his feelings for Veronica are quite superficial. Veronica also exhibits sociopathic tendencies, as is revealed at the end of the film when her character kills Jason without any remorse, and appears to relish watching him disintegrate after he sets himself on fire. She gradually loses her guilt for killing Heather Chandler, although she was affected by killing Ram and Kurt. Jason did have feelings for Veronica, but based on the limitations of his condition, I would draw a comparison: he valued her as if she were a $500,000 Birkin bag that he would auction off at the right moment.

3. Its satire of the clichés of teenage movies, especially after the comparison of Martha's (an unpopular character) suicide with the supposed suicide of the first Heather (a much more popular character), and how Martha wanted to kill herself to be a cool girl. It has the audacity to know that it is only for the laughs it would produce in the audience, and the absurdity of the dialogue where they take it very seriously, irreverent and hilariously. This is also evident shortly after the scene in the bathroom when another Heather tries to kill herself.

4. Although I saw a version for Blu-ray, the film, with the help of technology to improve the photography, does not look as old as it is (30 years). Despite having a relatively low budget ($3 million at the time), I think the production quality remains decent, especially the cinematography.

5. The End. Verónica holding Martha's hand was nice (after all the bullying). Without a doubt, it's an iconic moment

in coming-of-age movies.

What was just okay?

1. Specifically, the Heathers who survived. One of them was used in the conversation with JD about manipulating her to sign the mass suicide note, but that just moves the story to a confrontation between the main characters. They seem like cardboard cutouts to me… Even Heather Chandler wasn't as deep as Veronica; she was funny every once in a while. The other Heathers only served to distract Veronica from stopping JD.

2. Although it is quite funny, in my opinion, it falls short at times with its nihilistic undertones in JD's pseudo-anarchist dialogue. It's hard to believe that he suffers from inequality or economic crises when his father is a millionaire. The movie takes itself too seriously in that regard, although it has good comedic intentions, I was only slightly disappointed. It's a movie that makes you think and laugh about relationships between friends, not a political fiction epic.

3- Verónica's parents are mere fillers. Literally, they don't do anything.. This is a regular factor for me because the scenes that repeat of them eating in the garden are funny, but they don't contribute much depth or nuances to the story.

What didn't I like?

Honestly, there's nothing in particular that I disliked.

Yes, I would recommend it. I would only recommend it to people who I know have the same taste as me when it comes to black humor and satire, since it's not a movie for people who don't like such genres.

Yes, I would watch it again.

Rating: 8/10.

Did you like the movie? Or were you interested in seeing it? Let me know in the comments.

I was kinda disappointed by this one tbh. Something about this movie just doesn't quite sit right for me within the context of modern-day school shootings

Your breakdown nails how the darkness creeps in without losing its laugh-out-loud edge—Veronica’s arc from “mega bitch” ally to accidental anarchy queen is wild stuff. But c’mon, dismissing JD’s pseudo-anarchist rants as just shallow? Feels intentional to me—like the film’s satirizing rich kids who LARP as revolutionaries. Either way, your take’s got me itching to rewatch.
