The day... of reckoning / El día... de ajuste de cuentas
Narrative
This is my entry to the contest of: What if you wake up in a movie?
Translated into English, and Spanish at the end
Like every dream, there is no beginning, no end. I find myself walking in a beautiful meadow, of which I have no idea how I got there. Everything looks so peaceful. Butterflies are dancing around me, the sun is shining in a perfect blue sky. The grasses rise and fall, highlighting a sweet golden color to the swing of the gentle breeze that floods my lungs with its freshness. This breath of nature suddenly turns icy, a cold that runs down my back and shudders my being. I'm afraid for my life. I run in desperation, as if escaping from something that is chasing me, that I can't see, and I go into the vegetation to hide. With every step I take, it gets denser. Without realizing it, it has become a forest.
The landscape is not as clear as before; the trees have covered the sky almost entirely. The deeper I get, the more difficult it is for me to walk through the undergrowth. Mosquitoes take advantage of my bare arms, I feel their stings like stingers in my flesh. The heat and humidity suffocate me, it becomes difficult for me to breathe. In the gloom, strange howls, little ones, clicks, and crunches keep me company. The forest has been transformed into an untamed jungle. I feel that something is watching me, hidden in the jungle. I try to speed up my pace, but the large leaves and vines of exotic plants hinder my pace. Maybe it's a bear or maybe a wolf, who has sensed my smell, my fear from the very beginning. I look around, and there are no traces of the beautiful meadow where I was a few minutes ago. I keep feeling a pair of eyes staring at the back of my head.
Voices that get louder and louder calm my anxiety for a few seconds. Finally, humanity, I think to myself. Perhaps they can help me understand where I am. But what seemed like a pleasant talk is not a conversation; it is a strong discussion. My instinct tells me to stay away, but it's too late. One of them has seen me, and suddenly, a couple of rifles are pointed at me.
They take me by the neck and question me. I realize that I don't even remember my name. But they don't pay attention to my presence; something is bothering them, and it's not me.
Four men wear a uniform and military equipment. For sure, they are soldiers, maybe they are a special commando because of how heavily armed they are. They are not mercenaries. The tallest one examines me, his iron gaze pierces me. I feel like a little rabbit cornered among leopards. He is a giant man, with big, thick arms, a wide chest, and a strong chin. Her eyes are swollen and red, she probably hasn't slept in days. He must be the leader, everyone looks at him before making a move. The other thin man keeps pointing his gun at me. I keep my hands up and make silence. There is a familiar air in which he commands.
"Mac, you do the first watch, and then you go to rest," the human mountain ordered another of the soldiers.
This other one is a colored man, he nods, without responding or even looking at me. He has a blank stare, as if he has suffered a great loss.
Another man, also of color, intervenes in an aggressive explosion
"Ask her! Ask her what she saw!" It refers to a girl I went unnoticed. She's shivering, cowering like a ball, hidden in some bushes. Her face is stained with dried blood, but it's not hers.
"Ask her what happened to Hawkins?" He orders the thin man who is pointing at me.
He is restless, we are all soaked in sweat, but theirs are somehow different. It's not the heat they feel. It's anguish, maybe fear. But what are these beasts afraid of?
“Go ahead. Ask her.” This time, the order comes from Frankenstein
“What happened today? What did you see?" He said in another language that I also understood
The girl's hands are tied. She's wearing a dirty, sleeveless flannel, and her hair is matted. She looks tired.
“I told you what I know,” she replies, annoyed, without taking her eyes off the questioner, “The jungle took him away. What else do you want me to tell you?”
“This makes no sense,” the thin man replies, dumbfounded. "What do you mean the jungle took him away?”
"Billy, you know something!" inquires another subject who had also not seen, one of indigenous ethnicity, different from the Anglo-Saxon of the other two. “What is it?" he asks again.
This one said something I didn't expect to hear from such a fierce-looking man
“I'm scared, Poncho.”
"Bullshit! You ain't afraid of no man," says his companion incredulously
Billy is also sweating profusely, and he's restless.
“There's something over there waiting for us...”
"And it ain't no man.”
We all make silence, the tension can be cut with a knife between those men.
He finally gets up with his Colt M16 in his hands and lets go of what's on his chest
“We're all gonna die”
Everyone is petrified, except Dillon, the colored man who ordered the interrogation. He has a stony build and large arms. He interjects stubbornly.
"That man is losing it. It's nothing but a couple of guys running around. We need to kill them."
To me, it seems he ranks as high as the Frankenstein commanding them.
The giant man gritted his teeth and lowered his gaze.
"You still don't understand, Dillon, do you? Whatever's out there. It killed Hopper, and now it wants us."
“Damn it! It can't be!” I blurt out without realizing it, holding my head in my hands.
Everyone turns to look at me, and I'm the target of their stares. Now it's clear where I am.
Goddammit, we have the upper hand. As long as they do what I tell them to do. I think to myself.
The giant grabs me by the neck and sticks me in a tree a foot up. I start to choke.
“You'd better explain yourself if you want to stay alive,” he threatens. I make an effort, and from my lips comes a phrase, “Let go of me, Dutch.”
The confused man lets go of me, and I can finally breathe again.
“How do you know my name?”
"It doesn't matter how I know it, what's important is what I know, and I also know how we can get out of this hellhole alive. You are facing something you have never faced in your lives. This being has technology never been seen before. It is an expert in combat, much more than you. It is all you have known all your lives. Hunting is a necessity for beings like him, and we are the prey."
"We have everything to lose. It can see us with a high-definition infrared system and hear us clearly at a great distance. He takes advantage of trees to hide and uses a camouflage system that makes him mimic the environment, so developed that it makes him invisible to the human eye. It makes him the perfect assassin."
None of the men commented. They all watched me without missing a word that came out of my mouth.
"He's playing with you. If he wanted to he would have finished you all off in 10 seconds. Just like he did with the unit that came before you."
Dillon opened his eyes wide
“That's right. And I'm talking about John Hopper's team, the group you sent before this one, Master Sergeant Dillon.”
“That's enough!” shouted Dillon, drawing his gun and pointing it at me within a couple of seconds. The barrel of the gun hit my forehead
“I don't know who the hell you are, but you're not going to fool us.”
“Do it, it'll be a lot quicker and painless if you blow my brains out than waiting for him to rip my head off and skin me alive.”
At that point, everyone went back to being surprised
“That's right,” I continued, "the predator, as they usually call it where I come from, likes to take a souvenir of its victims. The skulls and their backbones."
"Listen very carefully. This is a species that is older than the bible itself. They have always come in search of subjects to give them battle. They are hunters by excellence. Ask the girl," I said, pointing at her.
“Anna, is this the first time this has happened here?” I asked.
The girl gaped as she shook her head.
“You see?”, I stated, looking everyone straight in the eye, and then turned back to the girl.
“Tell them about how your grandmother used to tell you tales of the hot summers when the jungle would come alive and take the men from the villages. Oh! The devil who makes trophies out of men! Isn't that right?”
The girl nodded her head slowly as the cross was made over her.
"We're ducks sitting on a lake for this creature, Dutch. It's a hunter that likes to play with its prey before killing it. Are you going to let it wipe out the rest of your unit?"
Dutch frowned and looked away. It was clear that he was somehow buying my story. If not, the lives of those remaining would be numbered.
“He hasn't attacked us yet,” I interrupted his thoughts again. “In his last encounter, when he opened Blain's chest,” Mac glared at me. I felt a shudder, but I was willing to save these soldiers' lives no matter what.
"You guys inadvertently caught him off guard and wounded him. Not seriously, and he will be healed by nightfall. We don't have much time to defend ourselves against his next attack."
“If you don't believe me, ask the girl, she knows what I'm talking about.” She was stunned again.
“Isn't that creature's blood on your pants, Anna?”
"It's obvious that this man is crazy. He's surely in cahoots with the girl and leading us into a trap. He must be working with the men who ambushed us," Dillon squinted.
Dutch gritted his teeth and ordered me tied up next to the girl.
It grew dark. The moon was full. The chirping of crickets, frogs, and whatever vermin surrounded us was not long in coming. Everyone ate their food in silence. Suddenly, the flares went off. Mac ran after them in search of the intruder who had penetrated the perimeter. Everyone followed. Meanwhile, I signaled the girl to keep quiet. I crept into a clearing. The brightness of the night let me watch as the predator descended from the trees and carried away the lifeless body of Private Blain.
I remembered all too well what would happen. A wild hog would run in, and Mac would stab it mercilessly in his madness to avenge his friend. Time passed, and again the soldiers appeared. Stupefied at their surprise at the disappearance of their comrade's body. They asked us again what had happened. The girl was scared to death, and the terror in her eyes did not let her utter a word.
Finally, Dutch approached me and lifted me up, holding me against a tree. He was indeed imposing in size. She rested her hand on my shoulder, and for a moment, I thought I would faint from how heavy she was.
“Let's say I believe you. What's your plan, wise guy?”
“First, you'll have to get rid of your weapons.”
Dillon broke into an outraged laugh.
“Never in a million years will I part with my weapons.”
The rest of the unit waited for Dutch's reaction in silence.
I swallowed and continued to explain to Dutch.
"The Predator can detect at 200 meters anything metal. Even your grenades and Claymores mines. He also carries a laser cannon with automatic sights on his shoulder, this one that can locate his enemies without even needing to see them and is capable of discharging a detonation as strong as a grenade launcher and blast them to smithereens without having to move from where he is."
"You don't find tracks of him because he uses trees to move. That's why you don't manage to find his trail Billy," I commented to the native Indian who was still clinging to the amulet he wore around his neck. He froze when I pronounced his name.
"It won't do any good to attack him melee, as long as he's got that laser. As if that wasn't enough, he's as strong as a couple or maybe three men. In addition, he has retractable blades, like a pair of sharp machetes, sticking out of his forearms capable of slicing through a man's body as if it were made of butter."
Dutch looked me straight in the eye
“What do you propose?”
I began to explain my plan, at first it seemed crazy to them, but given my assurance with which I was explaining it they began to understand that it would succeed. It had to succeed; be that as it may, I would try to get all the remaining ones out alive.
"Dutch, he is not immortal. Without his weapons, he's as vulnerable as any of us"
----------
I was sure that the predator was not desperate to kill us all in one blow. It would take its time cleaning the heads and the spines that he collected with great devotion, something that, in my opinion, generated pleasure for their species. It was to our advantage, as it would give us the time we needed to prepare.
Furthermore, it was not difficult for Dutch to convince what was left of his unit. His iconic phrase alone was enough.
“If we face it like we always have, we're dead. This is not a war. It's a hunt... and now we'll be the hunters.”
“Hooah!” they all shouted in unison.
The elite unit had gathered in a circle. They were no longer just soldiers with orders. They now knew the truth: whatever was hunting them was not human. But this time, they knew how it worked. And that was all they needed.
It was clear that these soldiers were used to being in hostile environments. However, the untamed jungle where we found ourselves was hell, for which they were not prepared. The heat, the mosquitoes, the hot and heavy air, the poisonous plants, and the random terrain did not make the job any easier. But for Billy, it was a field day, I could finally see him smiling; his gods had assured him that he would survive the demon that stalked us. He had prepared a mixture of cold mud, wet clay, and leaves. He used resinous plants to keep the mixture cooler for longer, knowing that the mud would dry quickly and they would be easy prey for the predator. They would leave no margin for error. Already two of his dearest companions had perished, it was time to make the fucker pay.
----------
We ran as fast as we could in the direction of the river. The plan to lure the predator had worked. It was hot on our heels. Mac and Dillon seemed to be flying through the brush, and my lungs were burning with the effort of keeping up with them. I continued to shoot everywhere as planned, and sure enough, the predator had us under fire. Rocks and trees exploded around me, and clouds of dust obscured my view. Already, the air was heavy, even more so, the clumps of dust made it difficult to breathe, but I had to hold on a little longer. Billy had pointed us in the direction and distance to the river. Mac and Dillon threw a couple of smoke grenades to confuse our hunter's infrared system. As expected, it didn't affect his detection system much, but it gave us a couple of seconds to reach our target.
Before we knew it, we reached the end of the road, a 20-meter-high cliff. There was no time to measure distances, so we jumped into the water immediately. The force of the current carried us downstream. In the commotion and trying to stay afloat, I could see when the predator dove into the water after us. I lost sight of Mac and Dillon as I tried to get to shore. My body weighed a ton, my arms burning from the effort. I was coughing hard from the water I had swallowed in an attempt not to drown. Suddenly, the green giant emerged from the river, shaking the braids hanging from his head. The camouflage system broke down as I expected. For the first time, it was fully visible to the human eye.
He gave a couple of taps to the console on his forearm, the camouflage system blinked without effect. I pulled out my gun to aim at him and get his attention, I knew he was a dead man. The laser on his shoulder activated at the threat, and suddenly three red dots appeared on my forehead. I was paralyzed.
At that instant, a burst of bullets hit the laser device, causing it to explode with sparks. The confused predator immediately adjusted the sight of his helmet to locate his enemy. At that moment, another burst of bullets hit his helmet, shattering it into pieces. The hideous drooling retractable fangs appeared after a scream of fury from our enemy. The gleam of sharp blades emerged from his forearms. Enraged, he tried to advance toward me. But the elite team acted as one man; it was time for a reckoning, not only for Blain and Hawkins, but also for John Hopper and his team.
Poncho had carried out Dutch's orders to the letter. He kept his distance of more than 600 meters from the enemy, camouflaged with mud and leaves to pass unnoticed. The predator was unable to locate the rifle, as it had been buried so that he would not detect it at first. Poncho took advantage of the distraction to keep it in his sights. He had only one mission: to finish off the predator's weapons.
Dutch emerged from the water, from behind, and choked the predator with a rope, squeezing its neck as tightly as he could. Billy and Dillon appeared on either side and went for his arms. Dutch's arm muscles clenched as he squeezed his enemy's neck with all his might. The predator was huge compared to them. It shook Dutch's companions as if they were mere rags. But they held on tight. They wouldn't let go for anything in the world. But it wouldn't be for long. Immediately, Mac, thirsty for blood and revenge, foaming at the mouth, didn't wait to slice the alien's belly open from the bottom up with a knife-tipped spear. Another bloodcurdling howl filled the jungle, and after that, a sepulchral silence reigned. The river was painted with phosphorescent green blood. Finally, they had finished with the creepy predator.
I awoke, troubled by a doubt. The bomb that the predator kept in its right arm, was it possible that it could be activated after death?
Thank you for visiting my publication and for coming to this point.

Empiezo a asfixiarme.
Tragué saliva y continué explicando a Dutch
Me quedé paralizado.
