Is There Room for Another Bridget Jones? Turns Out, They Just Keep Getting Better

General Reviews

Are you ready to be ‘cordially’ invited to the next greatest thing since the last royal wedding? Well they're certainly dishing up as much drama, and it's hot off the press!

Alright, let’s talk about Bridget Jones' newest instalment, Mad About the Boy. In my opinion its hands down the best movie of 2025... so far, and honestly, the most relatable rom com we’ve had in ages. Why? Because bless her chaotic heart, Bridget isn't living the fairy tale life that Hollywood is trying to sell us; she's living the life that most of us actually live.

Traditional love stories, including a heroic protagonist, a tragic heroine, and a happy conclusion, are so very last century! The truth is, most of us are stumbling through half a dozen complicated relationships within our lifetime, navigating dating apps, reoccurring exes, and whatever you call the 'situationships' that never quite make it to the “so, what are we?” conversations we all dread, and no one captures those hot mess chapters throughout our lives better than the legendary Bridget Jones.

The first film gave us the perfect love triangle, the second went full slapstick, and the third made an unexpected motherhood drama seem like the most hilarious YOLO thing a woman could do. Now, we have the most realistic Bridget to date, one who humorously and emotionally tackles middle-aged romance, heartbreak, and love. Despite all expectations, these films simply keep getting better.

The world of dating has changed a lot since her Mr. Darcy days, and she is now a 51-year-old widow trying to return to the dating scene while also raising her two small children.

Enter Roxster, a very baby faced 29-year-old park ranger with abs that look like they were sculpted by the gods themselves. Wait a hot minute, is Bridget turning into a cougar? That doesn't sound like a real dilemma, does it? While attempting to rescue her children from a rather large tree he just so happens to be patrolling the park and that's when they share a little meet cute. I mean, how spot-on is that for Bridget?

And what's even better? She doesn’t just ride off into the sunset with this young hottie. No, because things are never that easy. In addition, there's Mr. Wallaker, the lovely but emotionally distant and frustratingly handsome teacher at her children's school. Just like real life, the love triangle is complex and confusing.

This movie nails what we all know but don’t see enough on screen: love isn’t just one epic romance. It’s a series of loves, losses, and figuring-it-out. My favourite scene is when she walks away from the whirlwind romance and gets realistic about what she needs in a man. The movie shows us that sometimes the most dependable guy isn't your boyfriend; it's your babysitter, Daniel Cleaver, portrayed superbly by Hugh Grant, who also happens to be your reformed playboy ex.

Yes, he has returned and is currently teaching her children the art and skills of making dirty martinis in the most amusing way. This new chapter is undomesticated, disorderly, but authentic and truly in keeping with the Bridget brand… despite her efforts to ‘rebrand.’ Hang on Bridge… your entire existence is about rebranding, and nobody does it better!

The fact there isn't just one "happily ever after" in her life story makes it more believable. Scattered throughout the many tragedies and triumphs are these little, absurd, but lovely moments. From trying to flirt with a guy who is half your age and laughing at yourself or inadvertently turning a 'bring your parent to school day" into a lesson on insect mating behaviours. This is what makes picking yourself up, dusting yourself off, and trying out the dating world again and again after every setback, just so gosh darn fun!

In the end the next generation isn’t buying the old school Disney fairy tale anymore, and neither is Bridget. Like the rest of us, she's simply playing it by ear one awkward, cringeworthy date at a time. That is why Mad About the Boy isn't just the best movie of 2025; it's also the most honest, laugh-out-loud story we've seen in quite some time.

Perhaps since Bridget Jones’ Baby!? Ha… who could ever forgot the time that we all fell in love with that guy from starbucks?!! Wonder what he is up to these days?!

The British have this uncanny knack for perfecting love stories, and we should all just take a moment to admire that. Their delivery has a certain something; a combination of awkward charm, dry humour, and the ability to make tragedy feel profoundly amusing and incredibly moving at the same time.

Every time they release a new film from over the pond, I feel like I have been invited into a very eccentric community that will accept you with open arms so long as you bring the tea and biscuits! We all know that the Brits love their tea… and we love when they spill it!!

British cinema is like an elite club where the same iconic actors keep popping up in all sorts of films, from love stories like Love Actually to action flicks like Snatch, Lock Stock, or anything Guy Ritchie, to epic heists like Casino Royale or The Gentleman series. Regardless of the genre they always deliver a fresh slice of drama, served up with hilariously awkward moments, and perfectly timed one liners, all while keeping it completely deadpan like the late and great Queens expression at the 'Catalina Wine Mixer.'

If you're falling in love, robbing a bank or holding the worlds terrorist at gunpoint there's always a little slapstick to their storytelling. Even their horror films can't be taken too seriously.... Remember Simon Pegg and Nick Frost having a cheeky pint while fighting off zombies! Shaun of the Dead - brilliant film.

Mourners 'in tears' over Paddington Bear fan's marmalade sandwich tribute for Queen - Liverpool Echo

We can always count on this all-star bunch, regardless of the subject matter, it will have you laughing out loud. I may be a little biased though as it is my hometown, but I know their is many just like me - that's why they invented Brit Box!

Bridget is a shining example of how to be imperfect, and to find joy in the middle of chaos. So, grab your oversized knickers, pour yourself a glass of Chardonnay, and prepare to laugh until your sides ache.

Bridget's back, and she's better than ever..

In fact, I might have to officially declare Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy my new favorite Christmas film, knocking Love Actually down a spot. Sorry, Billy Mack I do love your festering turd of a record, but Bridget drunkenly swiping through dating apps is the kind of holiday tradition I can really get behind.
