Though not without flaws, the film is intriguing. When the robot’s intelligence drops to 40%, it mirrors a hopeless romantic’s struggles, subtly highlighting the male lead’s insecurities. He doesn’t want a perfect companion—just someone weaker and more submissive.

"Companion" may tell a story about an out-of-control robot, but beneath the surface, it’s a commentary on gender dynamics in modern society. The male lead treats the female protagonist as a disposable object, using manipulation and violence to maintain control. Through the robot’s experience, the film reflects the harsh realities some women face.

January is normally the time movie studios dump their duds to keep people mildly satisfied until better stuff releases, but this year has been one of the best January’s in a long time. It’s going out with a bang, with COMPANION. This is a comedic psychological thriller, and a very hard movie to talk about without giving anything away. Don’t worry, I wouldn’t do that. On the other hand, the trailers are another story. If you want to know nothing about this, avoid any of the marketing. The vague story is this: Couple Josh (Jack Quaid) and Iris (Sophie Thatcher) go on a weekend getaway and visit their friends at a remote cabin. S*** gets wild from there. The movie hooks you in during the opening sequence and seemingly enjoys catching you off-guard. This is original, has clever twists, is a bit violent, is very fun, and is unpredictable. Writer and director Drew Hancock manages to address serious themes like toxicity, domestic abuse, and obsession verses love, but in a strangely fun way. The biggest reason to see this is Sophie Thatcher. She was great in last year's HERETIC, but this role is the one people are talking about. I had the privilege of seeing COMPANION early, and I can’t wait for people to embrace it. Another low-budget movie done right. Relationships are hard, so remember, find somebody made just for you.
