Boyd_NixonSeptember 16, 2024Unlike her mother who stayed in an abusive marriage, Lily chose to leave Ryle after having their daughter. The film highlights the importance of self-respect in marriage, showing that harm inflicted by the other partner will never disappear magically. Lily refuses to repeat the cycle of helplessness, ending both the relationship and the pain.

Mitchell_CollinsSeptember 16, 2024
Mitchell_CollinsSeptember 16, 2024The plot feels a bit thin for a film that aims to tackle domestic abuse. If you remove the male lead, the story between the protagonist and the secondary male lead comes off as a somewhat cheesy but enjoyable romantic movie. The friends in the film are great—true friends always have your back.

Paul_BrooksSeptember 14, 2024Box office success aside, the film is still hard to watch. Although it tackles domestic violence, the portrayal is shallow. The romance feels hollow given the male lead’s behavior, and the 130-minute runtime feels bloated, especially with unnecessary scenes involving the secondary male lead.

Angelita_SanchezSeptember 14, 2024Despite the sweet tone, this isn’t just a romance. While much of the first part feels formulaic, the ending is genuinely moving and powerful, capturing human complexity and showcasing the protagonist's inner strength.

Amparo_TravisSeptember 2, 2024The movie version of this is way more captivating than the book, with a finale that's sincere and touching. But that scene at the end where Lily meets up with her ex again feels unnecessary, taking away from the subtle, beautiful storytelling. But overall, the film's pros definitely outweigh the negatives. We should all aspire to be like Lily, a strong, independent woman living on her own terms! And the casting is spot-on; Blake Lively was the perfect fit for the role!

Aurora_SchaefferSeptember 2, 2024After seeing the trailer, I was totally hyped for this movie. Breaking up with someone toxic is tough, especially when they try to pass off their bad behaviors as accidents. Victims might even hold on to the good times to make themselves feel better, and it's hard to break free. Lily's bravery comes from her childhood struggles, which drives her to keep her daughter from going through the same thing again. I bought the original book right after the movie.

Simon_McCormickAugust 27, 2024
Simon_McCormickAugust 27, 2024The protagonist comes from a family utterly devoid of affection, where no one ever supported her interests. She is ostracized by her peers just for speaking to a homeless classmate on the school bus, and she has never experienced what a normal relationship should be like. Yet, this woman understands how to accept others' kindness, embrace love and freedom, and recognize what she truly needs when reality doesn’t match her ideals. Her decisiveness in making choices is something we can all learn from.

Bridget_MccarthyAugust 27, 2024This film lingers in the mind long after watching. I kept pondering whether Ryle truly qualifies as an abuser, given that his violent outbursts only seem to occur when he is severely provoked. At other times, he is the epitome of kindness and gentlemanly behavior. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that the film's message is precisely this: we must leave behind anything or anyone that harms us, even if it’s wrapped in the guise of love. We shouldn’t be fooled by sugar-coated poison.
