Tusch74April 22, 2025I’d advise against reading Chandler’s novel beforehand, as the film significantly alters key aspects, including character dynamics and the ending. As a Robert Altman work, it’s far from disappointing, but by classic noir standards, it lacks depth. The novel’s intricate relationships and brilliant set pieces are largely absent, making it feel less layered than its source material.

tinaShayApril 18, 2025A quintessential neo-noir where Philip Marlowe is little more than a pawn—used by friends, manipulated by women, and toyed with by crime bosses—until he’s left with nothing, not even his cat. In the end, he must shatter his loyalty to friendship. If you haven't read Raymond Chandler’s novel, the film’s stripped-down storytelling might leave you bewildered. It follows the novel’s framework but heavily distills its plot, making some events difficult to decipher without prior knowledge of the book.
