This Is Spinal Tap (1984)★ 7.8/10

Without context, you might believe that Spinal Tap was a real band. In reality, director Rob Reiner crafted a fake documentary so convincing it blurred the line between fiction and reality. The band’s absurd misfortunes—including their album cover being censored into a solid black square—culminate in massive success in Japan. It’s a biting satire on fame and image that still feels eerily believable.

Looking almost like a performance art, this mockumentary delivers far more than just a clever format. The songs are genuinely good, and the attention to detail—from lyrics and album art to stage design—is astonishing. Even knowing that the band is fictional, the emotional beats, like the lead singer and guitarist’s reconciliation, still hit hard.

It drags at times, but the occasional clever line and genuinely catchy original songs help keep things afloat. Despite the obvious staging and scripted moments, it succeeds impressively as a mockumentary.

What makes This Is Spinal Tap truly captivating is how it makes a fictional band feel more authentic than most real ones. Director Rob Reiner nails the essence of British rock—from the musicians’ fragility and theatrical bravado to their childish egos and inevitable string of bizarre deaths.

This hilarious mockumentary tells us the story and downfall of Spinal Tap, a fake rock band willing to do anything for fame. With a lot of rock, this movie is one of the funniest of its genre.
